It is good to hear stories like Todd and Lee’s but they are to far and few.

I run one of the most popular engines in karting, the LO 206 and I have made race announcements on national and local web sites and have drawn zero interest from any current or future racers. For the most part my hope was to speak out to a audience that is less then a hour and half from two of the nicest tracks in the country yet there were no takers, not even someone showing up just for a look around or to ask questions.  I have explained how simple the crossover to roadracing is especially with the 206 and I have offered to be of any assistance before and during a event yet still no takers.

Perhaps my message is not getting heard but in reality it shouldn’t be my message it should be the karting industry and the sanctioning bodies message, that’s what all of those memberships and licensing fees we pay go towards right  ?

Is roadracing so far in the back of the closet that no one even knows it exists ?  I guess we can say “roadracing is the best kept secret out there”.

I’m sure entry fees have a lot to do with someone coming from the sprint or the mud ranks over to roadracing. Funny thing is that people are willing to pay good money to watch a auto race on a premier road circuit yet they cringe at spending a bit more to get a chance to actually drive on that same premier road circuit. Go figure.

From a photographers perspective, you’ll  never see a good photo of a racer with a camera attached to his head. From a drivers perspective, I’m not willing to take a camera in the throat at 90 mph because you want film of yourself. Keep the Velcro on your shoes, please.

Drag racing seems to be doing pretty good last time I looked and I’m seeing a awful lot of side-by sides and quads going down the road on the weekends.

I was relating to a different time period that I am all to familiar with that has had a very adverse effect on karting however if you look at one of American Kartings standard classes, Yamaha Piston Port that class has been through how many different pipe-can, clutch, and cylinder configurations ? What is the latest kick with this KA 100 also, maybe that will explain why there are so many new or lower hour Tag engines being sold on this site alone.

As for the tire of the month, in some instances its ‘tire of the week’ and trust me on this one because it happened this summer at a Ohio track where two different organizations scheduled a ‘national’ event one week apart both requiring a different brand of tire.  I might add also that one of these ‘national’ events had such a low number of pre-entries that it was actually cancelled so while you may have experienced great numbers at races you attended that hardly is a reflection of what is going on across the country.

As for the original topic of Russell’s closing I know for a fact that they were not a shop that just opened their doors and expected people to come.

A old dog like you knows that karting has suffered a ‘retention crisis’ since the 80’s and most of todays karters have no idea of Russell’s history because most are new arrivals that will be gone in 3 years just like their predecessors.

Pipe of the month, Motor of the month, Tire of the month, Chassis of the month that are too complex and too wide to promote any good competition on aging track structures has driven more away then it has brought in.

I’ve heard a lot of people say over the years “I didn’t leave karting, Karting left me” and who fault is that ?

Kenny did a great job all weekend long along especially pulling double duty along with the whole DKC crew. Big shout out to all the DKC folks who made this event happen and a big shout to everyone else from all the other clubs and organizations also who work just as hard at their events so we can play with our go-karts. You folks may not get the personal ‘thanks’ that you all deserve often enough but believe it, we need you, we appreciate you, and we Thank You.

I know I will be attending but I would say that I’m somewhat of a local [2hr.] however most all of the people I have talked to said they will be attending. I hope your wrong about the WKC guys, I would think that the chance to run on a new 2.8 mile, 19 turn track would be just too much to turn down. Hopefully the CES and WKA folks will make the trip also.
