Actual cost from Comet Kart Shop for conversion kit is $529. You would have to ask your local Rotax service center for a price to install. Here is link to kit from Comet.
http://cometkartsales.com/14.-281721-Clutch-Retrofit-Kit.htmlJeff SalakParticipantIf you have an old Rotax engine with zero upgrades. Its not worth it to upgrade in my opinion.
Old black coil change to new style green coil. $450.00
Clutch conversion kit with balance gears ect. $500
2009 or newer cylinder $600-700
New style air box around $150-175
With a new cylinder comes the need/cost of a new piston kit $150. Plus the cost of dealer/service center for labor. Clutch being a newbie done by service center. Coil and airbox you could change out.
Rebuilds are based on hours of use on engine. Rotax Top end about every 20-25 hours and bottom rebuild 40-50 hours of use.Jeff SalakParticipantIm getting a chassis shipped from Orlando Kart Center to Northern Illinois for $230. Im using Tag Shipping Solutions. It helps to go business to business. Also helps to have a chassis factory box. Most shipping companies want a pallet strapped to chassis box for fork lift. Remember to put not stackable. So they dont stack another pallet on top of chassis box.
Jeff SalakParticipantSent you an email for Ven 05 front brakes. Need complete set-up.
Jeff SalakParticipantJeff SalakParticipantIMO if this race was to ever happen. It needs to be in the months of Nov-March. It steps on to many other series that are going on in the month of July or summer months in general. Attendance still is low in most series. If they loose 25 guys/ 50 entries to a bigger race. That would sink a lot of road race series that are hanging on by a thread right now.
As much of a good thing it could be. Its effect on your local series could be in total jeopardy.
An example of this is CES Grattan was scheduled the same day as this race I believe. We loose 50 entries. We wont have road racing in the midwest!Jeff SalakParticipantIll take piston 53.98 and a few other parts. Sent an email.

February 1, 2014 at 4:32 pm in reply to: New to Rotax engines. Please advice on model/cost of maintenience Sr./FR/ etc. #20798Jeff SalakParticipantA New 2010 motor would never come with old air box/clutch/coil. Sounds like you have an older engine that was updated with a 2010 cylinder after a complete rebuild with 15 hours of use. Just my honest opinion. A Rotax dealer or kart shop would never sell an engine like that.
Jeff SalakParticipantTed,
Sounds like you should of asked a bunch of these questions before you purchased this engine. IMO your cylinder will not be a 2009 or newer based on all the other changes needed.
If your club racing chances are you wont need to make all these changes for club racing. If you plan on doing more than club racing you will need the updates. Check your local track rules on Rotax.
By the time you do all this to this engine it will be close to 2K with parts and labor.
A cylinder is close to $700, clutch kit $500, airbox around $70, new piston for new cylinder $150, plus all the gaskets, bearings and other parts needed to complete with seal and labor.
I would sell engine and get a newer engine. What ever you decide to do, Rotax is still a better investment than the other Tag engines.Jeff SalakParticipanthttp://tagshippingsolutions.com/
I would call these guys. Owned by karting people.Jeff SalakParticipantTo go from Tag Sprint to Road race isnt much to do. Gearing change like Ray said for most Tag engines and tracks this will be a 16T driver and sometimes a 15T. Lay back your seat so your not sitting so upright. Front brakes are always good to have.
What Tag engine you run? If you run a Leopard you may want to get a road race clutch.
What series do you plan to run with?January 17, 2014 at 3:36 pm in reply to: River Valley Kart Club – Indoor Event – Feb 8th 2014 #19767Jeff SalakParticipantSteve I believe you have to be 4′ 10″ to race in the adult karts 4′ for the kid size karts. This will be in the big karts.
January 16, 2014 at 8:56 am in reply to: River Valley Kart Club – Indoor Event – Feb 8th 2014 #19713Jeff SalakParticipantSteve these are rental karts.
Not sure what your asking.January 13, 2014 at 5:41 pm in reply to: River Valley Kart Club – Indoor Event – Feb 8th 2014 #19542Jeff SalakParticipantThanks for setting this up, Im in.
Jeff SalakParticipantDepends who you ask. 10 people 10 answers….
For club level racer 20-25 hours piston and 40-50 hours on full rebuild. Some guys even at club level go 10 piston and 20 full rebuild.Jeff SalakParticipantMatt I think your right. From what I heard IAME wants to discontinue Leopard. The only thing stopping it would be US market. Im sure there are enough Leopard engines and parts at shops in stock to keep it going for a few years. At what point do they stop running Leopard. Most likely when dealers have run out of parts.
At some point National level they will change to x-30. Club tracks will allow Leopards for many years to come I would think.
Just like the Sonik and other Tag engines, it will be a boat anchor.
Dennis I road race CES series and dont believe Ive seen an X-30 on track. Maybe WKA racers have raced them. I would think they would do good on a road track. Us CES guys love our Rotax engines!!!
Jeff SalakParticipantI heard Wilson and McHattie Dq’d for timing ignition issue. Wow!
Jeff SalakParticipantWhy was Wilson and McHattie DQ in Tag Masters?
Jeff SalakParticipant
Not for me!
Sorry Kelly, nothing against you guys. I just wouldnt race on this track for the life of me. I would come race with you guys if you let Rotax race with the leopards and ran a regular Tag class.Chad I live Wi/Il border 15 min from 94. We could car pool if you came to my house and go from there. No problem with that.
Jeff SalakParticipantWell said Peter.
Im very happy with the tracks CES race on. Happy that we dont race at tracks with lots of concrete anymore. Those tracks are designed for cars/safety for spectators. Not karts to run into any problems. Also happy we dont run on some of the tracks KART MARS races on. Those temp road courses that they race on are just plain nuts!
Chad you should try and make Grattan. Its the most fun track period!
Jeff SalakParticipantIve had a Sonik, Leopard, and now a Rotax. By far the most expensive to keep going was Sonik than the Leopard. Rotax is the most reliable affordable engine out of them all. 24 hours on engine and nothing has broken. Just basic maintenance.
Will have new piston and crank and rod checked this off season. Its first time back to a Rotax service center. I could keep going finished 2nd in points 3 years in a row with this engine in CES Tag Masters.
Enjoy blowing up a leopard if you get one…..Jeff SalakParticipantIm a Tag guy.
Shifter classes have large/sometimes huge fields at Blackhawk.
Come on out you will have a great time racing and hanging out after the races.
They have a stock honda class.Jeff SalakParticipantMike, dont think the turnout was good enough last year to keep Gateway on the schedule. People came for Sat race, then vanished and packed up for Sunday. Maybe cause of Mothers Day. Not sure if a different weekend would help. But we wont know that answer this year
Jeff SalakParticipantLooks like it helps to be on home soil!! Great job so far. Go USA!!!!
Jeff SalakParticipantI agree Keith!
IMO, this race would have the best turn out. If it was run between Nov-March. It wouldnt screw with 80% of the countries road race schedules.
