Get more performance from your Honda CR250
by adding twin carbs In making it breathe easier by adding a VForce 3 Reed Valve System and twin carbs. Experts claim that two smaller 30mm to 38mm throttle bore size carburetors (Mikuni or Keihin) on race 110 octane gasoline are better than one big one – they both passed about the same or a little more CFM but the smaller two carbs give a higher flow velocity ( that means more suction and quicker throttle response ) and add more low-end torque with two main jets now ! The VForce is from Sharkshifter, the twin carb intake manifold is from V-Twin Harley Products By Cycle X of Hazelhurst, WI. But the intake adapter plate to go from Honda to Harley is very easy to make but you’ll have to do that yourself with a small piece of about 3/8′ thick aluminum plate-just copy what I did in my YouTube.—Just go to YouTube and type in “Get more power from your Honda CR250 by adding twin carbs” as all the parts that I used are listed in my comments from Bob1) Won Overall shifter grand champion for the Year 2014 #92 team Craig Hemmen driver and Bob Horvath crew chief Elkhart Lake Road America kart club

Mike,
We just used the wireless telemetry system today to “dial In” our new Tilly HM-1A carb .
It does do the job very well.
We just temporally used the wireless remote carb adjuster to get a base line with the Tilly.
The only thing that does work not well is the GPS speed indicator.
It seems that the Kart can out accelerate the processor speed of the chip contained in the units board before the true speed is shown to be correct.
The wireless telemetry system is not wifi based. It uses either 900 MHz, 200mW or
2.4 GHz, 100mW transmitters with range of one to two miles depending the terrain and track interference
The most import feature that we used is the Real Time EGT.
That updates at a rate of 100 times per second.

Not much different then any other TaG or ICC engine carb set up with a forward facing Air Box.
One would just richen the carb a little to compensate for the added air flow and ajust by EGT.
I like see temperatures of 1,000 to 1,200 degrees at the end of the longest straight with the Honda engine
I’m an Engine Tuner / Mecanic and have built a lot of of my own equipment which can be quicklly moved from machine to machine to asist in Dailing in an engine

Now adjust your Go Karts Carb.by remote control from the pits. Just like the formula 1 guys have done for years for both the high and low speed mixtures
I’m not directly employed by Tillotson Racing of Kerry Ireland. But work very closely with them in developing new Go Kart Racing products.
Here is a very short video clip of the large Tillotson HW-26 Carb. with the remote control servos in action—A small completely self contained unit inc. a six volt battery pack to power the servos and receiver
with full wireless Telemetry feedback and logging in
real time to the pits for all the engines vital info… EGT, CHT, RPM,
coolant temperature, battery, GPS speed in MPH and both servos rotations angle
in minutes plus or minus from neutral . you can use a Laptop or a small fully portable hand held dashboard for the read outs. The range will be one to two miles with a needle valve screw rotation angle of about 180 degrees each
Tillotson has some these items in production already .

Jordan,
Shifters are alive and well at Road America Elkhart Lake, WI.
We have events about every other weekend for twelve weeks during the summer race season.
All shifters run together heads up > Honda’s, Motto’s, ICC’s and ETC.
We get about 18 competitors per event. All makes and engine combinations too.
I think they adding a bone stock Honda CR125 class this year too.
Come race with us and have lots and lots of fun doing it.
I’m 69 years old and have been in and out karting since about it’s inception in 1958.
My Kart driver Craig Hemmen is a retired Sprint Car Driver / Owner > 64 yrs. old
We both were just dabbling in karting with a couple of TaG. karts for a retirement thing to do…Thinking that we were just “Too old” to competitively Kart Race.
We got so enthralled with shifters after getting a sample test ride in one that we each purchased a machine and got competitive 110%. and won this even below:

Dave Holstein,
What great idea ! I’m going to used something similar to your innovation on both my Shifters.
One Honda CR125 Shifter has the New Tillotson HM-1A 42mm with a double stack fuel pump that does not require a fuel return line. So on that one I’ll just
use a standard Fram GF12 filter as a mini fuel tank (magic can) directly above the carb upside down to insure a good fuel supply to the Tilly.
http://i954.photobucket.com/albums/ae24/roberthorvath4/DSCN8628.jpg
The second Honda CR125 Shifter has a Mikuni BN40I 38-27 40mm with its own built in return line system. So again I’ll just use a standard Fram GF12 filter as a mini fuel tank.

Chris,
One last word on your suggested Telemetry system ( unless you tell me otherwise ).
From all my research other then the Eagle Tree unit (which was my last choice because it’s a pretty pricey $$$ system) it’s not the sensors that are the problem..It’s the display screen…except for the Eagle Tree none read out to four places for the standard exhaust temp of about 1,200 degrees
This one only does three places >
“FrSky 16 channels TARANIS X9D Digital Telemetry Radio Transmitter”
according to there own website

And a update PS > On my Telemetry system :
Although the telemetry system can read back all the engine’s parameters….I probably will just do the “EGT” And “GPs Speed” (self contained) as the rest are somewhat irrelevant to our type of shifter racing.
This way I can quickly transfer the small engine transmitter feedback unit from kart to kart with just one “Y” connection to the same Aim / MyChron EGT sensor that’s already installed most shifters anyway.
And get all the Karts in our little group dialed in on exhaust temp.
The photo below : Is of the Remote control Tilly Carb (36mm), Receiver, Servos and Battery all being fully self contained on the HW-24 carb itself.
It fits fine on the Honda CR125 with a specially made by my nephew (Barry) Tilly intake manifold and room to spare !

Below is a photo of the small engine transmitter feedback unit. reading back to a laptop.
1.5 mile range
or to a small portable hand held read out unit like below :

Chris Reinhart,
Are we on the same page on this thing ? Or am I missing something ?
You Say > “There’s some better packages out there…..”
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__508__172__FPV_Telemetry-FrSky_Telemetry.html
All I see is a Temp Sensor that won’t do the one most important reading > “EGT”
From what I read it doesn’t read to over 250 degrees
FrSky TEMS-01 Telemetry Temperature Sensor (for use with FrSky Telemetry Sensor Hub)
Up to two temperature sensors can be used at the same time. They are commonly used to read temperatures of model accessories, such as electric motor, ESC, glow and gas engine cylinder head, battery, muffler, voltage regulator, BEC, tail pipe and ambient air.
Measurement Range: -20~250 degrees Celsius/ -4~482 degrees Fahrenheit
Accuracy: 1 degree Celsius/ 1 degree Fahrenheit
Installation: Use zip ties to hold the temperature sensor tightly against the accessory that requires temperature reading. In fact > although the telemetry system can read back all the engine’s parameters….I probably will just do the “EGT” And “GPs Speed” as the rest are somewhat irrelevant to racing.
You Say > “Nicad’s, really? Hmm High Tech….”
So then > What battery do suggest as I have tried them all and Nicad’s Stand up the best to the engines vibration with the Carb, Receiver, Servos And Battery all being fully self contained on the carb itself.
Note the lithium-ion battery is the first one to give up the ghost !

Some of these negative comments are what all us innovators come to expect after a period of time.
When Edison invented the “Light Bulb” people said “We don’t need it …Kerosene is working just fine for a lamp.
Or when I bought a Electronic Paddle shifting unit from Europe and installed it on our Kart.
Link :
http://www.mechatron-kart.com/me-shifter-f1.html
Even my close friends scoffed at the Idea of paddle shifting.
But by the end of the season they all switched over to the paddle system…It makes driving a shifter such a breeze and safer too with both hands on the wheel.
On a very short track like our 6/10 mile tight twisty track..I’ll go head to head with any bump shifter out there and when is all said and done the paddle driver with be a lot less fatigued and will have felt like he was in a Big Indy Car to boot.
You Say > “Cool tinkering, but waaaaaay too involved for a kart…”
Why Not ?
Here is a photo below of the finished machine… All set for the 2014 seasons with almost all of my inventions on it.
It doesn’t look too complicated to me for a kart .

Pete,
You brought up some good points and I can’t find fault with any of them.
I’m so old (age 69) I’ve grown old along with the fun sport of karting all my life.
It’s the same old story > First a lawn mower engine -Then a West Bend-Then some Mac 6s and 10s & on & on.
But maybe the best years (1980) were like you say > My two girls on two Yamaha karts fitted with the KT-100 and me on a Zip Kart with a KT-100
Very inexpensive Karting back then with that equipment.
But now myself and my close friends (and I’m not trying to tell other karters what to do) We just want to see how far we can take a Honda CR125 shifter —Cost not being a factor within some sort of reason.
Thanks

Steve,
You say :
“It occurred to me that your tuning system would be a real useful tool for a good dyno setup”
Actually that’s how I got involved with Tillotson in the first place.
They read one of my ekarting news post about my earliest remote carb adjuster and asked me to make one for them to use in there engine / carb testing room.
And that’s how this whole Telemetry thing got conceived in the first place and then talked about again at the 2013 Vegas Super Nats with Tillotson.

PS > I also manufacture in my garage besides the shifter external starter motor …Two other types of gear reduction external cranking motors for Karts without a gearbox. Very light and very powerful too.

FYI.
Ocono Bob talking again.
Let explain a little about my Telemetry unit just a little more.
It is two completely separate units both with there own rechargeable battery packs.
You can use just one or the other or both.
It will be a nicely finished product ..Not sold though me but by the Tillotson Carb Racing division at a cost at about $500.00 USD for each unit.
The unit will be designed to be relatively quickly removable on race day after the engine is all dialed in for the day.
It takes about 4 minutes to transfer the Telemetry feed back unit from Kart to Kart using just two tie wraps.
The GPS speedometer is built right in —The RPM is by magnetic induction on the plug wire and the engine temperature > Coolant and EGT by the same Aim / Mychron probes and yellow two pin quick connectors we presently use now.
The mixture servo control unit is also a fully self contained unit taking at the most 20 minutes to remove and replace on race day after practice.
I made the unit just for myself because we have a team >Me a pretty good engine tuner and my pretty great driver. A retired pro guy. He did open wheels cars,410 Sprint cars, Nascar cars and on and on.
PS > He also owned a major Big Car Track here in the USA
So the system can be legal in any class…You just remove it to race legally.
I’ll probably just used the feed back portion of it after we get the Kart pretty well set up early in the season to be “on the edge”

Now you struck a cord in me.
I hope this isn’t to far off the topic ?
I’m so old (age 69) it doesn’t seem vintage to me because I was there in those very early years (1958 to about 1961) with my Fox Go Boy with a 2 1/2 Clinton engine and then after that a Simplex Kart and Dual West Bend power plants….That seemed to me at the time to be as fast as a lot karts out there today ?
I must have watch this 16mm promo film below about ten times when Mcculloch chainsaws was into karting big time at our 1961 Sport Show .
The whole thing is pretty good.
Back in that day it took two strong men to start a Twin Mac Kart !
(Even with little man Don Knotts at the wheel)
(July 21, 1924 – February 24, 2006)
At time > about 6:50
And check out that trophy gal…That’s one long kiss..I don’t get out to the races much on a Sunday….Do they still do that when you get your Trophy at our racetrack > Badger ?

Steve,
As you can see.
I’m a Karter, engineer, inventor,innovator …But…not a writer.
I re-wrote it a bit and added a few more photos to further clear up what I’m trying to say here.
One more thing.
After I make post like re-installing the kick starter back on the engine everyone tells me “That just won’t work Horvath” but they never tell me why it won’t work ? Must be just an old “Wives Tail” ?
We all have been using the KickStart for a few years now with absolutely no trouble at all ?
They say what’s wrong with just pushing it to start.
That can get very tiring after a few times….What if you spin and stall out on the “back forty” that can be a long walk back.
With the Kick back on you just re-start yourself and finish the race!
A snapshot below of # 92 Shifter Kart at the Wi. Rod & Custom show and me Bob Horvath (the old guy in the photo) and my grandson Myles Beck.
PS That’s just a mannequin in the kart itself.
