Glad to hear he’s ok. If this is the guy that hit the wall by Turn 3 on the big track it was behind our pit spot and a sickening sound that brought a lot of people to the fence to see what had happened.

The event has great feel to it this year. Last year we had around 18 karts in Pro X30, with a few more in the Leopard class, and this year it’s 47. Tons of talent and it should be some great racing.

My son is running the Pro TaG class. We had around 16 or 17 karts in Daytona last year as I recall. That was just X30 and the Leopard class was bigger. With the combination of the two and new format I’m hoping to see at least 30.

I buy WD-40 by the gallon at Home Depot. I clean it after every trip onto the track and clean it thoroughly in between race weekends. WD-40 will remove everything and keep the powdercoat looking shiny. Brake cleaner will dull your finish. I get brake cleaner onto the frame once in a while, while cleaning bearings and such, WD-40 returns the shine. I avoid water at all costs just because of the rust-prone parts on the karts. Cleaning a kart after a rain race is a royal pain in the butt.

Besides keeping your chassis looking nice, cleaning it regularly will point you to potential problems like loose or broken parts.

If you’re in the area this weekend, as Wade mentioned, you can see a great example of all of those engines. At the Gearup race there will be 2 strong Leopard classes, as well as the TaG class that mixes X30, Rotax and Vortex engines. If you do and have any questions Wade and I will both be in and around the Swiss Hutless tent.

I would advise starting on a Yamaha, with all due respect to Walt I wouldn’t buy a Briggs motor and hope someone else shows up with one to race against. If you’re just starting out, the Yamaha will force you to drive and learn how to corner. After a couple of years of TaG motors we went back to Yamaha Sr at Etown this year and the fields have been picking up. About 13 entries at the last race and a lot of fun.

My son started on the Yamaha, went to HPV, PRD Fireball and then X30. I absolutely love the X30. BY FAR the most reliable and lowest maintenance engines we’ve run. If you’re dead set on starting with a TaG I couldn’t recommend X30 enough. The Leopards are still the standard but they are slowly being phased out (by race promotors and IAME) and within a couple of years you’ll own a boat anchor.

I have a homesteader Challenger 6×12. It’s a good trailer, but I wish I had gotten just a bit more from the start. If I had it to do all over again I would’ve gotten 2 axles, instead of 1, and gone just a bit bigger to a 7×14 for more space. I didn’t plan on regularly driving 12 hours to races when I bought the trailer and the single axle and one tire each side always concerns me. I would also like the added stability and braking a double axle would’ve provided.

I tiled the floor with some durable tile form Home Depot, painted the interior and built a shelf along the left hand side, with a vise bolted on. I also picked out all of the PitPal stuff that I liked and recreated it out of wood to save money. I have a tire shelf big enough for 8 tires, a helmet shelf with hangers underneath for hanging suits, an axle stand and a notebook shelf. I broke down and paid the money for the real Pit Posse liquids organizer to mount on the door. I use a turbo tire changer so that bolts onto the shelf as well as my bead breaker, right next to the vise.

My 4′ wide rolling tool chest stores in the nose and actually never leaves the trailer. I have my everyday tools in three tool bags that I can easily carry to my pit table.

Helicopter tape on the side pods works well for us. When it gets all scuffed up just replace the clear.

I get the impression at the races that officials are loathe to come down too hard on drivers for fear of them leaving an already depleted field. I don’t necessarily agree with that strategy but I think it’s a real problem. More penalties will solve our problems way before collapsible kart parts will.

Disciplining drivers (and Dads, tuners etc.) is not unlike raising kids. Let them know what you expect and be willing to punish them if they don’t meet those expectations. Idle threats get you no where and following through changes behavior.

Walt – you’re a machinist that can fashion a spindle out of a coat hanger. We’re not all that talented LOL

My son is a clean racer and a master at avoiding wrecks, due to thousands of hours on IRacing, but I still bought 3 spindles, 2 wheels, 1 kingpin, 3 ties rods, 2 seat struts  and 2 axles, blew up one PRD and had one wiring harness failure this season. That’s not to mention how many metric screws, nuts, bolts, set screws, springs and the like I had to replace in between races. I’ve built up a good stockpile of spares, but because I haven’t been doing it for 41 years I still need that dealer trackside pretty regularly.  :)

Some are, but it depends on the part and the chassis. We started on CRG (dealers on Long Island) moved to Top Kart (Dealers at the track in etown) and this year we’re running Swiss Hutless (Dealer in New Jersey). In every case I’ve had someone nearby that I could get parts and support from. If you’ve never worked on a kart before you’re going to need some help learning things like mounting tires, picking and installing gears, maintaining that Yamaha KT100 clutch, getting the kart scaled so the weight is correct and on and on and on. It’s not rocket science but there is a learning curve. With the right support you’ll be having a blast before you know it.

My question to you would be: If you went with the Corsair and wadded it up at the end of the long straight in Etown would you be able to get a front end spindle, steering shaft, side pod or other part? That value kart could become a headache really quickly. There are a few options to find a kart. Under $1,000 may be a little more difficult.

-The Long Island Karting Association has a FB page. Post on there and see if anyone has something on the Island.

-The Etown club pre-season meeting is this Sunday at 1pm at the race track. Go there and ask around or let John Ferris (He runs the show) know what you’re looking for.

-The classifieds on here are great but at that price it will be tough to find something that doesn’t have to be shipped.

-There are several Kart shops in the area

Kaos Kart Shop, Oakland Valley Race park (OVRP), Kart Attack, Keller Motorsports. Call them and see what they have in their shops.

I personally would go for a more well known brand. My number one reason for that would be the availability of parts at the track and help if you need it. I started off with an old used CRG chassis and because I was new I found it to be too much to maintain. We ran it 3 times, sold it and bought a new kart.

Does it matter? We had a great event in the infield and I trust the road guys and dirt guys did also. Do we need 3 different threads so no one gets offended?

I didn’t mean to suggest it was real. You could tell that the floor pan bolt drama was manufactured but they kept cutting to karts on the track to help the illusion. The editing is just about unwatchable if you actually know what you’re watching. That being said it’s still hard to not pull for someone to get something done on the grid, whether the karts are on the track already or not.

Watching Malukas spin and lose about 8 seconds and still come back to beat competitors like Lemke and Holden is just silly.
