Gene- welcome to the sport. I hope you have a great time which ever class you choose and stick around. I have both and I have run both, and am older. If your not in great shape, you’ll get worn out in tag. If you end up stuck on the track (inside rear won’t come up) it can be just brutal. You find out what “death grip” means, and you’ll need help to load your equipment. the speeds for tag are simply fantastic, and as said before, if new the learning curve for driving and upkeep is very steep. If you get bit by the bug bad, racing all the time, the money leaves you like water out of a fire hose. I have to agree with the advocates of the lo206, much less expensive (around here $3500 turn-key), cheaper to run (pump gas ), and maintain (forget rebuilds, sealed motor). not nearly as fast, but the difference in lap times for the really good people would surprise you. You might want to expand where you would run rather than stay local for the difference in cost. in 206 you will always be racing someone. In tag they can become parades pretty quick. You can also pick up an older euro frame, cut the back bar and reweld it to clear the chain, and have a very nice setup for very little money.
again best of luck, hope you have fun.

Gordo, welcome to the sport. Don’t worry about age. If your eyes are still good and you can get out of the kart, your good. Learning curve can be steep for tag, you may spend some time catching up to the kart. As for parts, whoever is local where you are. I’m a firm believer in this, the extra pennies you may save are meaningless when your really in need of help to get back on the track raceday. Even if that means he’ll go where you could go direct. The guy helping will know what to do, he’s been there. Good luck and have fun! I still am.

Lou – Have you posted on the want to buy section in the forums? Everybody has stuff to move, if you were to put a wtb with some photos you might turn something up.

John, in looking at the photo you supplied, you may want to go over the wields on the kart, the seat support strut looks as though its cracked.

Seriously, It might be better to travel more to run the Briggs. +1 on running it to start. Its an anvil, and you get what your really needing at first, seat time.
Tags are beelindingly fast for newbs, you’ll spend a lot of time catching up to the kart, and spending on tires and upkeep. I have both, and loved the Iame, but it seemed like it was always something. The races tended to be parades with the really quick fading into the distance on the new tires bought for the race. Our Lo206 class specs a rock hard tire that lasts forever, and a very reasonable clutch. They then line you up and throw you in the deep end of racing. Classes anywhere from 16-22 at the club level, You can learn at a much more reasonable pace. Great class, Briggs is a class act for doing it, and I hope they keep it up.

Evan – if you could, have someone set in the kart and then look at the frame. Also,
the frame can crack on the underside as well. The frame wasn’t loaded up unless you had someone in it as it would be on the track.

Evan – Carefully check the frame paint for cracks. You may have a boken frame somewhere. It should have responded in some fashion. Frames are usually thought to be shot if they don’t respond to anything and there are no cracks anywhere.

This isn’t new. fwd stuff was tried awhile back, rummage around the vintage sites.
Can I assume they at least hacked the rear axle in half, put on 2 more bearings and another brake on? Must be a shifter of some sort, don’t see any chain, and given the length of the steering column and all that wt up front, how’s about a bigger steering wheel? There’s a purpose for this I’m sure, though I’m at a loss as to what it is. Everyone else up to this point that moved from karts to cars seemed to do really swell, why go through all that? Is that grumpy guy that made solo karts over there still in the business? Betcha he could weld up some standard beauties at much less cost. Betcha.

I’ve never been thrown off a forum because of what I run before. Learn something new every day.

+1 go to Franklin, crank halves aren’t cheap and you need a press and someone with experiance with a brass hammer to get it put back right. Please, as Tony said, do not run anywhere but a track. People are not looking for you, can’t see you, and will run over you.

Mike! I still have the motor you sold me. Maybe put 90 min on it if that. Ran at a track with 21 sec lap times. Still strong, still 0 play in the crank. Make me an offer I’m just too old to run it anymore, gotta 206.

Watching UK pull WVA apart like boiled chicken. Up 26. At the half. It’s not pretty. Back to the Tulsa shootout.

I’m watching right now, they’re at Dismore’s, the Comet sign on the fence, clear, uskps clear, kartlift blurred. What? Why? Racing is really good btw.

Alex- +1 go pick them up. He’s asking 500. It doesn’t say “firm”. If there are two, offer to take both for 800, get a motor package from Walt, and go have fun. Tags, are fast, fast, fast, and really burn up parts, you, and tires. You’ll like the Yamaha.

lo206 in Nashville.  Southeastern Karting Alliance has put together a class with kartwarehouse  that’s as cheap as you can get, fields of 16-22, just a lot of fun.  The races are at the speedway, easy to find, pavement everywhere to pit on, Brick  restrooms and concession stand, running water, simply all aces for an old geezer to go a run and have a great time. You do have to bring your own shade, and  yes, that is very important in the South.  Your in Southern Nashville, literally minutes (like 10 max) from I-65.  I love that little motor. Slower for sure, but just an anvil and you can start the thing from the seat.  Too cool.  Get one , come on over and dive in.

Been to Comet yet?  Just east of Indy on 40, just outside Greenfield.  Been at it forever, great group, karts, motors, parts, help and advice.  Anyone there knows karts front to back.  Can probably look at the grandkids and tell you what size you need.  They all have won about a billion kart races, and helped just as many.

Lawrence – Welcome to the sport, I hope you have alot of fun. Did you get the tools to remove/adjust your clutches? There are specific wrenches made for both, I don’t know if 0ne will work for both. You’ll need them to change the clutches.  If your using atf set the clutch so the filler holes are at 10 and 4 o,clock, fill it from the top till it leaks out the bottom hole, and seal it up. I’d check it after every heat after its cool off and top off if needed. If you have the tools I’d put the horstman on, sounds like you have a dxl, things will last forever.  With that pipe you want to slip it to 10.2k, and if tuned properly, you’ll know it.  They crack when you open them up, and coupled with the slipper clutch and right gear, do a good job of planting you back in the seat.  You may want to put some teflon tape on the needles for you carb, that will help seal it up.  Those carbs always pumped too much at the top, and not enough at the bottom, the high speed can be closed down quite a bit, and the bottom opened quite a bit. if your bogging off a turn, your lean, open it up.  If you 4 cycle down the chute, lean out the high speed.  Check the plug or head to see if your too rich or lean.  You want a nice coffee color tending to grey.  Grey is too lean, black too rich.  Have fun, Yamadogs dialed in are a blast!

Robert- you could do much worse than the dxl 4 spring posted on this forum.  Make sure you have the correct driver for your chain, you can use atf in it, slip it to 9600, it’ll last forever. parts for it are everywhere, cheap.  As Walt said, a really great clutch.

Those tanks scream enduro, or laydown kart. +1 swap for something else.  Plus don’t forget, your dealing with 45 year old metal.

Reggie- pretty sure that’s a k-71 Komet piston port motor. That was the forunner of the hpv, probably a horstman/ LT oil clutch.  Check the oil in the clutch before you start it.  Fairly fast stuff. Todays hpv has a different crank half and clutch. Appears to have been well taken care of, no class today for it in sprinters that I know of.  Throw an LO206 on it and go race it.
