IIRC,  EVERY braking and steering bolt must be safety wired.  Overkill, if you ask me.  The Europeans seem to get by fine with nylocks and frequent checking, but they also build and rebuild their kart far more often than we tend to…  So…  Be prepared to break quite a few 1/16″ drill bits!  LOL

I’ve successfully drilled some of the bolts by hand, on the kart.  I sacrafice one nylock (per bolt size) and loosen it a few turns then drill through the nylock and bolt.  Then the nylock serves as a guide for all other bolts of that size that I need to drill.

I use lots of oil and a relatively high load and low speed to prevent heat building and work-hardening of the bolt, which makes drilling next to impossible.  Alternatively, you can remove the bolt and use a commercially available safety wire guide device.  I was too cheap to get one and devised my method above…  (Actually, it was borne of having to drill a lot for the next day and not having the device…)

Hope that helps.  Welcome to the addiction!

    Cheers,

    ~Ted

That just takes me to my inbox, where the “unread” message used to be. :)  I’m going to try clearing my cache and trying to relogin.

David — that’s the problem — I deleted the message before clicking the notification, so there’s nothing to go look at. :)  Clicking the notification simply takes me to my inbox with no unread messages, and there’s no way to clear the blue bubble.

You’re on to something with a white helmet — these days nobody has a plain helmet, so it’s the way to stand out from the crowd.   If you have to choose between fancy paint and parts to go faster, choose the parts.  If you want to feel faster, get the helmet paint.

I’ll do a used one….and have a zero wait time at the moment.  I won’t lie — TJ has sent out some better lids than I, but he charges more than I do too. :)  Ditto with Indocil Art, and Shell Shock.  All quality products and quality companies.   I’m a hobbyist, but have a design background and degree, so I like to think my work is decent.  I’m happy to give you a quote.  FWIW, my profits go back into my karting losses, so I don’t make any money in the long run! LOL

And thanks for the referral, Dan. :)

I would never powerwash a kart, or any other vehicle, though it seems popular with dirtbikes.  Hi pressure water into bearings, and other quasi sealed areas seems like a bad idea.

Helps if you “fold” the tire into an oval and slide the rim into the wide part.  Also, some rims have a taller inside than outside (or maybe it’s the other way around…)  so install with the smaller diameter, but making sure you’re orienting the tire correctly.  5″ tires can be done by hand.  6″ tires, not so much.

A lot of plastics melt around 350-550 degrees, so I’d be removing it, pronto.  Also, the last thing you need is something accumulating debris INSIDE the engine — a plugged rad is annoying, but kinda’ functional whereas a plugged engine is disastrous.  I’d remove it and not think twice.  My guess is same as yours — preventing foreign object intrusion for shipping or such.  Though most I’ve seen use a solid orange cap with lip for that purpose…

^^ Still more fun than a Rotax….lol  If I did this, I’d have my suit and helmet on, with a heater blowing on my right side…and my wife wouldn’t be able to get me out of the basement.  Thanks for posting the pics.

Wouldn’t be too hard to build a MDF box to hold a kart chassis hooked to a force feedback wheel and a big LCD screen and trailer it to WKA’s events so spectators could “experience karting” with little insurance risk. ;)
