Chris HegarParticipantIn the end at nearly every major event like that your always going to have the best runners fighting up front for the win even if there are only 10 karts entered. Congrats to all runners.
Chris HegarParticipantMan that’s a low turnout for this event. Road race is even pulling better numbers than that right now. Might be time to turn that deal into an every other year program. Was the weather a possible problem or were there other event options at the same time?
Chris HegarParticipantWe tested all kinds or pressure with the same results. This issue was also common among some runners in the mid west. At first our thought was that some curb had a sharp edge because that’s the kind of tear it tends to look like but after more than one track it was obvious and the fact that MG replaced more than one set for free proved a factory issue. For us we will not risk tire failure, an instant flat at speed can put you on your head and we do not need that possibility. My brother and cousin both went off at over 100 in high load corners, no more MG for us.
Chris HegarParticipantYour going to get 20 opinions on dyno hp numbers which can all be related to calibration and or who’s the biggest BS machine trying to sell motors. What I can tell you is that the spread your showing is to great and 48 is into open alky motor range, I think many might agree with that statement. My opinion on dyno testing will always be the same, does it run consistent from top to bottom and can it be replicated on track, numbers are nice but don’t buy into it until you see and feel the difference. I can get you a great number just before it blows up. ;-) My dyno is a 2+ mile long track and it works great.
Chris HegarParticipantMichael,
Mr Ray rarely posts on here so I thought I’d let you know what actually happened to him. Race #1 he he got hit by a spinning kart which sent him off track. In race #2 he had an MG tire failure which has been common with the yellows in road race cik 125. In the NW even with cool weather I have seen many tires come apart, it’s a factory defect originally thought to be a bad batch now known to be a continuous unspoken problem. In our personal group of 5 karts (3 srock moto and 2 ICC) we have seen a loss of 7 tires front and rears alike at Portland, Laguna, The Ridge and Oregon Raceway Park, all tracks high load high speed. Mr Ray did have a motor issue in the Thunderhill final which was solved by Sunday when he ran for the top spot all day in 2 different classes at ORP. Glad to see you guys had fun, hope we can make it down some time.
Greg, Dad’s working on an 80cc laydown as well. Rain… we don’t got no rain around here, it’s been 90 for 2 weeks! Come up next season if you can.
Chris HegarParticipantI’ve seen a good spec Honda blow away some very good open moto with the works in upgrades, depends on the track, driver, ect. Myself I’ve been at it for 25 years running everything from 4 stroke low HP to 250cc twin 100 hp motors. We currently have 3 stock moto packages and 2 ICC in house all running long track and some sprint. Even on a full 2 mile course your only going to see about a 1-1.5 second difference in lap times ICC to Stock moto, I have all the data to support that. If the numbers you have given were correct that would put a 14 HP difference between stock moto and ICC. That type of difference would mean the ICC would lap a stocker on a 2 mile track in no time at all and the overall lap time difference would be massive. Not trying to be mean or condescending but your rough numbers have way to much spread. 125 hp variables are not that great from one to the other it’s all 125cc displacement, there is no magic. Drive ability on the other hand can give a false since of additional HP. An ICC has better power application that even stock moto, the stocker is harder to drive based on big bottom torque when you hit the throttle. An ICC does have more peak power based on RPM but often the bottom is easier on the pilot because it’s a soft hit.
Just my opinion.
Chris HegarParticipantThey don’t have 45 hp, they have a dyno printout of a motor that has 45 or they have a big bore kit already. ;-)
Chris HegarParticipantI never said it was legal. I bet tech is marginal at any of those events especially with the karts. Just sayin if you want free fun power without banging your head and wallet against the wall bore it otherwise driver will be about 90% of the speed with Autocross. Best memory and car control will win +/- 2 hp isn’t the answer. To many people feel they get out horse powered when that’s not it.
Chris HegarParticipantPop a big bore kit in your 125… winner winner chicken dinner.
BBBBRRRRRRRRRPPPPP! BBBBBBRRRRRRRRRPPPPPP!
Chris HegarParticipantIf your looking for a hp advantage buy a 250 single it will eat them alive if you can keep it between the cones.
Chris HegarParticipantHonestly Bill for AutoCross your not going to see much in time gains from 1 or 2 hp differences which I think at best is about the most your going to get playing with factory timing. In that arena I’d spend my money on the softest qualifying tires money can buy. Grip will gain you massive time on a green surface like that with minimal wear based around how long your running.
Chris HegarParticipantIf your talking about open motors then the world is your oyster with a programmable ignition. Towards the end of our 250 twin program BRC was headed in the direction of a different curve for each gear selected. Don’t know how that turned out but it was on the table. Your going to get 100 different views on degrees.
Chris HegarParticipantIn the end it’s about keeping a class structure alive not about what would happen to one particular motor package especially in a case like this where it’s pretty much the same motor. Affordable racing motors for all vs burn it down to be competitive with the top 5% combinations (exaggerated some but close to true). Open moto was the class for do what you want, pay what you want, buy power if you feel you need it… that class is gone because of no limitations. From the outside looking in 01 stock is starting to look like that class again. It’s normal for karting to do this though and history will repeat itself again as it always does with this or another class.
In the case of the 01 becoming a more stable motor with whatever adjustments I’d imagine the cost to build would go down some or stay stable in order to keep the market interested in having both options but that’s up to the builder. If it doesn’t blow up easy it’s better for the class and the sport meaning the average runners wallet. Remember it’s not the top 10 guys that we need to satisfy it’s the great big group of mid pack and back marker weekend warriors that keep this class looking big and strong to the world, these numbers attract the people, it’s all about numbers.
Keep in mind my opinion is based around the whole sport not just SKUSA sprint. I’m a road race guy when I have time which means SKUSA really doesn’t effect what my classes do.. or does it? In road we only allow the 99, with this 01 issue we have seen numbers in rr grow based on the fact that SKUSA runners are letting good 99 models go very cheap because they no longer need them for SKUSA if the want to feel like they have a shot at winning. Is this good for road race? Yes it is for now but down the road if SKUSA runners fade away from 125 stock because of high costs to operate the 01 it will damage the whole sport. A happy market needs an affordable motor package, without that were doomed to lose people which will raise costs for all. By the way did I mention road race runners have the biggest balls in the land? 100+ mph.. bring it on yo! ;-)
Chris HegarParticipantFor years we have ran 110 in road race with the 99 stock stuff and in the past if you were running open moto with 99 motors the first thing you did was jack up the exhaust like the 01 again all on 110 fuel. All that being said if you lean on the motors with 110 you can detonate any of them especially with more exhaust. It’s such a fine line between being lean and feeling it slow vs tearing up pistons and heads that I doubt many regular people would notice it on track before they were into the wallet.
To me the 110 is a band-aid for the problem, I think the timing should be backed down on the 01 but like you guys have stated before SKUSA is deep in with this issue now so it may be too late. Timing adjustment until equal and safe or individual 99 and 01 classes.
Chris HegarParticipantTrack configuration is also going to be a factor at some point. Longer tracks should be dominated by the higher exhaust ported 01 if both cylinder options are jetted to satisfaction. You just can’t beat .040 higher exhaust no matter what you do, it’s straight up more RPM range equaling more top if geared for it.
110 fuel would help save the 01 from destruction but as noted above it would definitely be the end of any reason to hang onto the 99. Who’s to say that once 110 is offered the 01 tuner won’t just lean on it even more gaining power until it again moves into detonation range.
Chris HegarParticipantYou guys let McNeil win…
