NHKA at Loudon runs an “open” shifter class due to limited numbers.  Meaning that stock moto has to run against the KZ guys.  Not a problem if your Josh Lane, but for the rest of the humans on Stock Moto its a drubbing.  With that said the Hill Course at Loudon is one of the most unique and challenging tracks in the northeast for any driver.  The racing at the front between the KZs as well as at the back with the Motos is always excellent and in the end nobody cares too much about trophies and points as long as the racing is good.

In regards to the NESKS:  For our last race of the season we went to NJ with our 15 year old chassis/motor package to see what the competition was like.  My driver qualified 19th out of 21 after having won his local club championship.  These guys and gals at NESKS in both the KZs and the stock moto are extremely fast and professional and take their racing very seriously.

If this is your first year in a shifter kart you do not belong running with NESKS.  Although they welcome everyone to run with them which is nice, its not realistic.

Do not bring your 15 year old chassis and home prepped engine thinking that you might run with NESKS, you will be in the way (like we were).

NESKS is as close to SKUSA as we get in the northeast.  Drivers should have perfected their racecraft and have a well sorted mechanical package before trying to enter one of these races.

Did someone really just invite Al Nunley to post again???   He has been confusing and confounding new karters for decades now with all of his “theory”.

While I am a relatively new member here I have long been a member of Bobs as well several other sports related forums.  The loss of activity seen on the EKN Forums is very similar to the loss of activity on all of the forums that I have participated including Bobs.

The change away from the old V-bulletin style boards killed many forums, but I personally think it is more a case of evolution.  Forums are for old guys that like to debate and discuss.  Instagram and facebook give the younger generation direct access to the people that can best answer their questions.

This old fart however will continue to read and occasionally post on these forums and others until they completely die out.

Quick update. This 15 year old kart and motor package turned out to be pretty quick on the right track! Enough to win the NHKA shifter championship.

It was however a constant battle to keep it in one piece. Huge thanks to everyone on the EKN forums for all the advice and most of all Mike at CFMotorsports, George at Apex and the great guys at sharkshifter.

As the father of a kart driver watching my son race a variety of karts (asphalt oval, dirt oval and sprints) over the last 10 years it has always struck me as ironic that people view the sport as particularly dangerous.  Maybe we are just lucky, but we have seen and my boy has been in a fair number big wrecks without so much as a broken bone.  Yes, we have seen drivers taken to the hospital for a check-up, but nothing like you see in high school football or worse yet lacrosse where it is surprising if someone does not end up on a stretcher by the end of a game.  It would be interesting to see a list of crash/injury data to compare to the more common ballgames.  Plus it would give me some ammo for all the people who say “Are you crazy letting your son do that?”

If you really want to see a lot of people being shuttled to the hospital go to a club level motorcycle race.

I guess my point is that if we are going to make safety changes to the sport then they need to be changes based on empirical data.

Well it wasn’t just for one year.  We are coincidentally rebuilding a 2000 CRG Heron that also has a 45MM rear.  I guess luckily for us the rear axle and components are some of the few things on it that are NOT all used up.  I will let you know if we do end up putting the 50mm rear in it.

Awesome help Oscar.   This has the short master cylinder plate from the side rail and it attaches pretty far up on the U section.  It dose not appear to have ever been yellow.  It looked like a pretty stiff chassis to me.  The brakes are indeed a pretty modern design, unfortunately they are in terrible condition.  This thing has never had a new bearing in its life either!

On the plus side it has a new front bumper(installed upside down), new body work(mounted to rub 2 out of 4 tires), a new seat(pinched in between uprights) and a new radiator!
