I bought an electronic automotive spin balancer back in the 80’s and was told by the guy who sold it to me that he increased the sensitivity of the unit a bit to balance smaller wheels.   I never saw a calibration table, so I’m not certain if he really did anything. There are two modes for balancing on those machines.  Dynamic and Static.  I was told to use Static setting which is adequate for a Kart tire.  I was very successful with the whole project and used it for 15 years.  Since I had two karts, raced 5 classes per weekend, I had 12 to 16 tires to balance.  It was extremely handy.  I had a couple of adaptor shafts made with a straight taper to use a front wheel hub as the mounting spindle.

Have you tried using the unit you have access to?  As I remember, the only data I had to enter was tire diameter and select “static”.  The amount of weight to add is relative.  It might indicate a number for wheel weight based on the assumption that a larger tire is being used. Once you establish your translation table of indicated weight vs actual weight required, you’ll be ok.

The big deal was getting the special spindle adaptor machined at the time.

Just remember that MIS dates will be 2 Day Races, with Friday as Registration, sign-in, move in, and Safety Tech Inspection day.  The schedules will be such that 4 hours of practice is scheduled for Saturday, and early wrap-up on Sunday so you can get home at a decent time.  Schedule will be pretty close to what we had in 2015.

Thanks for coming.  Even though our crew had a few “rusty” spots to get over,  I think we all made it through the weekend with only a few glitches.

Thanks for racing safe.  No ambulance calls all weekend.

I think this year’s format that allows for 4 hours of practice on Saturday worked pretty well.  We tried to get guys grouped by speed, yet still allow guys who wanted to race as many as 4 classes to do so.  We wanted to allow you to get on the road and at least part way home before dark which is the reason for combining classes on Sunday.

There were 206 entries this year and the 2 day format allowed us to pay all the bills.

We’ve reserved September 19 & 20, 2015 to meet again for the M.I.S. Fall Classic.

I’ll send you an occasional email and post our progress on this forum to let you know how preparations are moving along.  If you have any nifty ideas for the next event, we’d like to hear them.  And, as usual, we can always use helpers to support the activity.  We were a bit short in a couple of places this year.

We will race on a wet/damp track.  No puddles, standing water, no rooster tails off tires.  We’ll adjust the schedule according to the weather which is common practice at most kart races.

Pit pass wrist bands will be for sale from 4 PM to 7 PM Friday night at US12 entrance and at that entrance from 7 am to 7 pm Saturday and 7am to 3 PM Sunday.  The gate staff may hold over for a few minutes on Friday if it looks like folks are still arriving.  The tunnel, (10 ft clearance) will be open all weekend for those having a pit pass.  No pit pass sales at the Tunnel entrance on Brooklyn Hwy.  There will be road signs pointing to correct entrances.  US12 entrance to paddock allows high profile vehicles to cross the racing surface so the gate entrance at that point when track is active will be limited.

In response to the request by the F125 guys to race twice on Saturday ( race in both F125 and Unlimited), the schedule has been readjusted so they don’t have to run back to back.

We will adjust Sunday schedule later if needed.

No need for a WKA license.  The event is neither a National Points Race nor a Regional race.

Buy a pit pass, enter a class, pass safety tech, and you are ready.  We will follow the WKA rulebook for most classes when it comes to ages, weight, and engine specifications. There are local option classes based on kart combinations most racers are familiar with.

Special Note: The M.I.S. Fall Classic is sanctioned by WKA, and follows WKA Rules with local option classes, and uses WKA Insurance.  This is not a WKA National Points race or Regional race.  We therefore require a Minors’ Release for Minor Drivers to be filled out, and signed at the Entry Gate, where pit passes are sold, and again at Race Registration. We understand that WKA membership cards indicate that a minor driver may have a waiver on file, but we cannot honor that card information at this event.
For your convenience, a copy of the waiver form is available on the MKC web site and may be printed out, IN COLOR, notarized, and be submitted by a minor at the track in case that minor’s parent or guardian is unable to attend the event.

The answer gets pretty obvious.  None in your class, if you don’t sign up.

There are several 4 cycle classes.  We haven’t had an overwhelming turn out in the past.  That said, 2 years ago, we had a guy pester us incessantly about his class, then cancel his pre-entry, stay home, and then find out later that it was the biggest class of the weekend.  The sure fire way to kill your favorite class is to not enter, and see that your buds didn’t enter either, because you didn’t.  Kind of a contageous situation.  It feeds on itself and pretty soon your class disappears.

If there are suggestions for improvements to the schedule or overall event content, we welcome all input.  In addition, we are always looking for volunteers to help hosting the event,  everything from winter planning, to staff at the track to make tech, registration, scoring, track pickup, or grid operate smoothly.

I appreciate the desire to drive your kart from your pit spot to the grid and vice versa.  As a karter, I like it.  As an event manager, it keeps me up at night due to safety concerns.  So lets talk about safety for a minute.  I was at Grattan this summer and witnessed the CES racers driving through the pits.  As a pedestrian, I was afraid I would miss the guy who was coasting while watching the guy with the noisy engine coming from another direction.  MKC limits the use of bicycles, skate boards, ATVs in the pits as we have had insurance claims from people that have been hurt by these vehicles.  Now, let me share a tid-bit from ISC, the track owner.  Other than licensed automobiles & trucks, they don’t allow ATV’s golf karts, or other motorized to be operating in the pit/paddock area unless you want to rent a golf kart from them for $400/weekend.

Let’s talk about another issue:  The pass thru from pit to grid past the Michigan Room where registration is conducted.  That is a congested pinch point area as karts are coming and going as well as foot traffic.  In addition, we want to inspect karts passing to the grid for presence of tech stickers, driver wrist bands, numbers, and scoring transponders.

We can’t produce you the results you expect without some of these check-outs.

So, bottom line is that safety, and attention to detail, is what we are all about.

We are always looking for experienced volunteers looking to help make a good event, outstanding.

Thanks for the suggestion.  Naturally when we publish a schedule it is done in the winter after reviewing last years’ participation.  Quite a bit of research went into setting up the schedule and it was anticipated that the number of karts would be greater at MIS in 2015 than in years past.  We needed to publish something for you to look at.  That being said, we always have the opportunity to modify the schedule, especially for practice.  What we have is a 20 minute cycle time per group:  Track time + track pick-up. That makes for 3 groups per hour.  Why three groups?  In the past, folks complained that the type of kart on the track made for awkward practice laps with some folks creeping in the turns then blasting down the straightaway.  The enduros didn’t want to play on the same track with others. The kids/juniors need to be protected from the adults.  We had an irate father chew us out 2 years ago because his kid got run off the track by a competitor.  I have photos of a karter being run over from behind because  faster karter could wait just one moment in an infield corner.

Bottom line.  We’ll adapt.  We have the option of doing 2 groups.  Either longer cycle time like 30 minutes or the normal short cycle, but more of them.  If everyone would pre-enter we could have these issues settled before race day.

So, hang on, we’ll make the best of the situations as they present themselves.
