IAME vs. Yamaha.
Reed valve vs. piston port.
Electric on-board starter vs. external starter.
Low maintenance/low stall clutch vs. high maintenance/high stall clutch.
Tillotson vs. Walbro carb.
KA100 has a few more hp.
KA100 seems to need less blueprinting & rebuilds.
KA100 is pipe exhaust, you can put a pipe on the KT100 but the “can” exhaust is more popular especially in sprint racing.

Margay Ignite or VLR Emerald. Both are ready to race for $4,000. Perfect setups for someone new to karting!

Unfortunately you will have to travel quite a ways for the nearest sprint kart track.

While that 07 Leopard might seem like a great deal, just understand that it’s a glorified paper weight with almost no value. You’ll be better off in the long run with an X30. Even a LO206 is a smarter choice right now than a $500 Leopard.

You’re really close to Leading Edge Motorsports, go talk to them. http://www.leadingedgemotorsports.com/

You actually have a few kart tracks nearby: Dixon, Davis, Sonoma, and Prairie City.
I’m very surprised at the lack of reaction to the announcement of the pending closure of Russell Karting Specialties. They are one of the oldest if not the oldest organizations in North American karting.

In my mind this points out the awful truth that US karting is suffering from decreasing participation. Over the last 15 years give or take expenses have skyrocketed, technical complexity has reached the mind boggling point, and it appears that US karting has forgotten where it came from. Many in the karting industry agree that participation has dropped by over 50% over the last decade and a half.
Where does this doom and gloom perception come from? Every race I went to this summer had great numbers, some the most entries in 10 years. Most series/tracks/clubs are thriving. I won’t speculate on why Russell is shutting down but I’ll tell you this, the days of just opening the shop door or track gate and expecting people to show up are long gone. Shops better have a great online presence and be at the track supporting customers. Adapt, diversify, and treating the racer like a customer are huge.
Pipe of the month, Motor of the month, Tire of the month, Chassis of the month that are too complex and too wide to promote any good competition on aging track structures has driven more away then it has brought in.
This is the biggest myth in karting. It hasn’t been that way in a long, long, long time.
Matt I disagree with your statement about karts (sprint karts in particular) not having become too technical. Dozens of geometry settings, different axles, different ride heights, trick alloy tubing, hubs, wheels etc. The number of adjustments available can be bewildering to even the most savvy racer.
I agree with Matt. The amount of maintenance and tuning on the current crop of motors/carbs/clutches is minuscule compared to what it once was. Just because the current karts have a ton of adjustability built into them doesn’t make them anymore complex than it used to be. Any good tuner or shop should tell the newcomer not to worry about any of that. I’m glad I don’t have to screw around with pills and have lasers for front end adjustments.

Stockholm Karting Center in Cokato, MN and Midwest Karting Association in Eau Claire, MN are the 2 tracks up there. No idea about kart shops in the area, you can probably call the tracks and find out. Those two tracks are mostly 206 and World Formula.

Almost all shifters in the midwest are road racing with Championship Enduro Series or street racing with the Southern Indiana Racing Assoc.

The F Series is a great regional series but I wouldn’t start there. That series is for the experienced racer not someone new to the sport.

You can search for tracks in your area here: https://www.kartpulse.com/tracksandseries/map

Oakland Valley Race Park (www.ovrp.net) is one track/club to look at.

Go check out the racing at your local track. I would start with club racing a Briggs and Stratton LO206. The 206 is cheap to own and operate so you can focus on learning to drive.

Yes.
No.
What you or anyone else considers “blue printing” probably differs. Most builders/shops consider break-in, carb setup, and setting valve lash “blue printing.”

If anything the motors get better with more time on them.

Cambrian Go Karts (www.cambriangokarts.com) could probably help you out. You need to find a shop or somebody at the track that will help you better.

If you’re not on Facebook you should join just for the various LO206 groups: “West Coast Briggs 206 Racing” and “Briggs LO 206 Racers” are a couple. You’ll get answers faster on there.

Have you looked at http://www.thecoloradokarter.com and the forum on there?

The best kart for a newbie is one that is bought from and supported by a local shop. The local kart shop is your best resource for questions, parts, and is invaluable to someone starting out! Find out who supports and sells what in your area.

In ascending order of price and power: Shifter engines are Stock Honda (CR125), Mod Moto (125cc modified dirt bike engines) and KZ/ICC (purpose built for karting, mostly Italian made). In relative terms, Stock Honda would be the most affordable to own/operate and easiest to tune.

The engines built today are exactly the same as the very first ones produced. That’s the entire point of the LO206 program…
