450? Haha I’ve pulled 490 before, that’s how one of my engines got the nickname “hot head”. It’s sitting out in the garage with a hole burned through it’s piston, not from that same race though. But ideally you want a dark ring in the center of your flex, your picture looks like it has a shadow there. My header always ends up looking like your picture no matter what. I think my flex looked like that when I lost the aforementioned engine. So be careful.

But the 4.50-6 on all corners is one of the setups I was recommended also. How much would the handling change if you ran a 4.50 tire all around on 5″ wheels?

To the two karts retired in the first turn during the Saturday Stock Leopard race, was there by any chance a GoPro recording there? I may or may not have pulled off an accidental and very spectacular spin there. I think I saw you guys grinning at me after I kept the throttle wide open through it all and ended up facing the right way somehow. I know Jeff Troup had to have seen the dirt cloud I kicked up!

I knew you’d have the answer Walt. Glad to have an explanation for the failure. We are going to try and run it as a direct drive now. Not looking to run for points or anything, since no one runs it anymore. Just looking to get more practice on the sprint tracks.

My bad, forgot about the cadet class. But like Clark said, I’ve seen maybe only one other karter in that class. And I think he or she had the whole track to themselves. Still, would be good to race in to get familiar with the tracks. Check your messages Dominic, tomorrow should work to meet. If the roads aren’t a block of ice of course.

How did I know you would say Blue Mountain? I could probably go out on my back deck, yell out and you would hear me haha. I live off Hardesty, just down the hill from the country store on Howellsville.  You know, that sketchy downhill turn that everyone can’t stop flying off of. If you wanted to, we could meet in person and discuss everything.

I think you would be able to handle yourself in a shifter, I would never discourage anyone from getting one, like others may try to do. The WKC has a big shifter class (Stock Honda CR125), might actually be the largest class currently. You’ll only be getting on the track at Summit when the WKC is in town though, so you will have to travel around if you want more seat time.

For your daughter, I don’t think there’s anyway to get her on the track with the WKC at her age unfortunately. You’d want to start her off in a 50cc at a sprint track I’d say. I don’t know much about the youth classes so someone else may be able to weigh in.

Again, if you want to drop by to discuss everything, I can give you my address. I know you have a lot of questions. Can show you our karts too. Might be a little tough to get out right now, looks like this snow will be sticking around in the meantime.

Hey Dominic,

It just so happens that we live in the same town. I live just outside of it, in the mountains. Glad to see someone else new is interested in joining karting with us, I see Jeff has been busy getting new faces in for 2015. Summit Point, as you already found out, is about as close to a “hometown” track as you’ll get in that it’s the most local. We do what’s called road racing there, where we race on the Main and Shenandoah circuit at higher sustained speeds, unlike sprint karting where you are at smaller, purpose built tracks.

If karting is your first motorsport experience, you might find a shifter kart to be a little challenging. I know that with the WKC they want two years prior racing experience in a slower kart class, or if you have experience in other forms of motorsport that should suffice. The reason being is that the shifter class is among the fastest classes that run, and with the high speeds they want things as safe as possible. I currently run the Yamaha KT100, a 2-cycle entry level class. I’m looking to be in a shifter soon though.

Other areas to run locally are not really all that local, Sandy Hook Speedway is a smaller sprint track northeast of Baltimore that welcomes anyone with a kart. If you are willing to travel 3+ hours though the east coast is fairly rich with kart tracks. Virginia International Raceway is another WKC destination

Glad to see you want to have your daughter involved too, but I believe the minimum age for road racing is 12, so you’ll have to get her started on the sprint tracks.

Again, we are probably about 20mins from each other, so if you have any questions I should be able to help. First race with the WKC is May 2nd, so you still have time to ready yourself. Good luck, and welcome to the sport. Once you get in, I don’t think it’s possible to put it down.

I can vouch for the SPK-7, though I’m a bit biased as it’s the only vest I’ve worn (only started karting a year and a half ago). I have no complaints about it, fits nicely and is otherwise unnoticeable on the track. Being one of the cheapest choices in the rib and chest protector market is a big plus too. And for all the protection you get from it (ribs, spine, chest and some shoulder) you can’t go wrong with it.

I run the class with a sprinter so I can help. I run a 40′ NCD nose, and my front wheels are just barely tucked in so it all depends on how narrow you are.  For the pipe, the RLV L4 is what I run and just about everyone else will be too in Yamaha, so that’s the good choice. You may want the L3 if the track has less straightaway though. And for tires, you have all sorts of options. My choice is a little unorthodox, as I run MG Yellows with their 6′ tire in the rear. It’s done me well so far, so that’s an option.

Well, there is Sandy Hook Speedway and Nicholson nearby, not full blown sprint tracks but still. If someone approached me wanting to build a kart track in the D.C area, I’ll gladly throw some money at it. Make it happen someone!

I agree with Jim and TJ, you can watch just about any video of a shifter on a sprint track and see just how intense it is. With your only experience being rental karts, a 100cc will be plenty to get used to. Especially on a limited budget if that’s what you said.

Road racing can get you the speed thrill just like a shifter too. And in NoVA it’s local too. There’s a fairly strong KT100 crowd too, and with an enduro kart it’s a great way to get started.

I live in VA also, (Front Royal) your best option for local karting would be road racing with the Woodbridge Kart Club. I assume you’re Northern VA? As the GP Motorplex is also 5 hours from me too.

KT100 again for 2015, then we’ll (hopefully) jump ship to Stock Honda. The way I see it, the costs of TAG would eventually equal out to that of Stock Honda so why not go a little faster?
