Karting Industry:

Connor is a friend & co-worker of a karting friend of mine here in Indy. I spent about an hour today talking to him about this program, it’s legit and a great cause! You don’t have to be in South Carolina to help them out, they need good used equipment: suits, helmets, gloves, karting tools, parts, etc.

Also, if you had an interest, I’m sure he’d be happy to help you setup a similar program in your area. I can’t think of a better way to spread one’s knowledge and love a sport than to eager deserving kids!

This is an easy one… New Castle has 160 kart average because Mark Dismore kept his focus on the fundamental, affordable classes such as Yamaha and LO206 and didn’t push the Rotax agenda. They also don’t require you buy tires from the track and entry fees are reasonable ($45/class I think?). Maybe more people should copy what NCMP/KRA does…

Lol! I wrote an article on this in National Kart News a few years ago & created a pretty big poop storm… Yes, it happens. And the EDM expert I talked to showed me a chart with different ‘textures’ he could cut too & assured me we could “hide” the EDM process rather easily.

As Dan said, a simple rules change eliminates this… Simply say “blowdown has to be between X & Y and we (sanctioning body) don’t care how you get it there.”

Research I did shows machining a cylinder would add $150 to the blueprinting costs and eliminate the need for EDM and/or the “pot luck” or search for a “national cylinder” ( adding $600-1500 more in costs). Also, I never remember “blowdown” being an issue with the old open Pipe engines…

So to answer the initial question: yes some people do/did EDM cylinders and yes it makes a significant difference on Supercan motors.

I really recommend UPS Freight.  I’ve had 100% good luck shipping karts with them, you can either pick it up at the hub (and they’ll forklift it into your truck bed) or they’ll deliver to you…

Joe Janowski & I went yesterday, representing National Karting Alliance.  It was good to catch up with a few people in the karting industry; however, in general, karting is not very well represented…

One of the most interesting conversations we had was an impromptu one with Keith Freber from Margay regarding the “beginner classes” he’s overseeing at Gateway’s new kart track.  A turnkey $3995 Margay kart with Briggs LO206 engine, all spec ~and kept simple for new karters.
