This can be common on kid karts. You cannot change the gearing as the rules require a 10/89. Shortening the chain will work. Or, fabricate a spacer out of aluminum maybe 1/4 to 3/8 thick to place between the mount and the engine. I have also seen thick spacer washers used to raise the engine a bit.

You do not have to have a tool. It can be done, its not always easy, but it can be done. I never used one during our first couple seasons. It is easier and quicker with an installation tool. If you buy a tool try to find one that is steel. I have one that is a steel tapered “cone”, it works great. The aluminum one with 3 arms that sits on top of the clutch hub works but the aluminum galls up and the shoes can be hard to slip on.

The short answer is yes, you can swap the head without changing the piston as long as you are switching an “B” head with a “B” head. It would be a good time to replace the top ring while you have the head off. As far as your compression and port heigth, there is no way of knowing for sure without checking it. You can certainly just swap the head and the engine will run just fine, but you may not be legal.
