I have always run a Walbro style filter with my Leopard. I change it ever 2-3 tanks full and it does collect a small quanitity of residue. I run Sunoco 110 pumped out of the factory blue/yellow drum. Never had any carburetion issue that I could trace to the filter.

After a nasty “off” into the dirt I used WD-40 to clean the grit out of my three sealed 50mm axle bearings. I did not remove the shields. Yes, this is a messy process. Then I spun and sprayed them with aerosol red lithium grease. That was last season and they still feel and sound like new. I “rinse” them each track day with a 1 second shot of Tri-Flow. This keeps my axle clean and bright too.

I had a Yamaha YZ that behaved this way… it turned out be that the flywheel woodruff key had sheared and the flywheel was slipping on the crankshaft. About once in 25 tries the motor would fire but as soon as I tried to rev it the flywheel would slip again causing the timing to change. The engine would stall and refuse to start for another 25 or so attempt until the flywheel happened to slip into a close-to-correct position.

I wouldn’t expect the Leopard to idle well… although if yours used to but now doesn’t that is interesting. Someone suggested the ground strap–did you remove, clean, and reinstall the ground lug to your engine block? Check the coil wire clip where it connects near the clutch cover. Clean the tab and tighten the clip by crimping it gently a bit with pliers. When was the last time that you changed your fuel filter? A dirty/clogged fuel filter can upset your carburetion.

I wish that was the explanation! I’ve done some more reading and I think I have changed the pop-off pressure. I cleaned the carburetor recently and installed a new carb kit. I am thinking that the pop-off has changed due to the new diaphragm, check valve, fulcrum, and spring I installed. Time to learn how to tune the pop-off pressure.
