I got mine in and ran is last weekend as well.  I used the new style springs but it looked like the old style would work as well, at least on my kart.

My gasket didn’t break but I did notice some distress marks when putting it over the socket.  The old style exhaust fit over the gasket a little more loosely than I expected, however,  I didn’t notice any oil leaking out at all –  success!

Doh! After I posted this, I called up fastech.  The guy took a look and said he thought it would fit, and the new style exhaust has the same bell shape to it where it mounts up.  If anyone has any positive/ negative experiences with the new part, feel free to post!

Looking at it again, it just says that it is “sufficient,” but there’s not a reason not to wrap the lead around.  I will try that, and it seems likely that it will pick up the spark doing that.  I was mostly concerned as to why the spark would be weaker than normal/ my last motor.  When I first ran this new one, it was cutting out a little bit, so I cleaned up the leads on the bottom of the coil and bent them slightly so they would get a better connection to the harness plug, which improved how it ran.  I thought that this might be related.  But, if it seems to be running good I will just forget about it.

Thanks Tony.  I do have a way to adjust the cable at the other end so I was curious.

Good point on the threads.  It has the newer style 360 degree elbow and I didn’t notice any threads, but will look again.

In any event I will get the right parts, but was just curious about this weekend since I won’t be able to get them in time.  Thank again!

We have a 1960’s “go kart” that was my dad’s growing up.  No bumpers. He used to have 2 mac10 chainsaw motors on it that would get it over 65mph.  I not sure I can even fit in that thing anymore, it’s tiny. And yes, very lightweight.

Thanks guys, this actually make sense to me. I knew there would be a good reason! I have done some enduro type racing at an indoor track where a lot of more experienced drivers/ karters would show up and I can see what you’re talking about.  I always attributed it to the fact that the indoor track is half the width of the outdoor track with a lot of turns so people have to get a closer when passing, but what you are saying makes sense. I have to admit it is fun to be aggressive at the indoor places but if I was in my own kart I would probably not appreciate getting rammed.

Thanks. Would any axle of the same size work?  I see some cheap OTK axles on ebay as well.

It seems like the keys I have might not fit though, so I guess I would need new keys if the axle is a different type?

This was in 2013, I think in both cases it was in a turn where someone’s front wheel got in between the wheel and the side pod of another kart.

I agree about the fun part, but lower risk in the event of contact still wouldn’t take away from the dynamics of the driving.  If anything it seems like people would make more attempts to overtake and make things more interesting.

However maybe you are right and this sort of things doesn’t happen often, so the bumpers aren’t really neccesary.  I do have the new style rear bumper and think it’s a good idea.

Thanks guys.  Unfortunately it’s not the max RPM setting, I checked that.  Sometimes it will read 13,xxx, just not consisently, and if I look at the min RPM for each lap, it’s typically 0.

I don’t think it’s the Mychron as I had it on the previous engine with no problems, and just swapped the engines out.  However I will switch with a friend’s mychron and lead and see if that helps.

The mychron lead is not wrapped around the spark plug wire– it is just attached using the plastic clip – I believe that is how the instructions said to attach it for a rotax, and that’s how it worked on my old one.  I’ll try wrapping it around a few times to see if that helps, unless there’s a reason not to do that.

I’m not concerned for my own safefty, or displeased with the way things are.  Just curious what people thoughts are because I think it’s an interesting topic.  I’ve seen a lot drivers get knocked out of a race early on because of this or total their karts.  If some of these incidents were more minor and kept karts in the race it seems like it would be beneficial.

However I’m not sure if a full bumper would even work on these karts.
