James McMahonParticipant
I guess it depends how aggressive you get with your cleaning.
I cleaned mine in 2010 (when I bought it, used) and haven’t had to do it since. It’s been living in my unheated garage for all those summers and winters and no signs of corrosion, yet. I also soaked the beejeepers out of it when I practically drove through a lake once.James McMahonParticipantYou nailed it, fast in faster out. Slow in fast out is a great tip when you are starting out however.
In terms of power vs apex, really depends on the turn and the line you take, but if you are wayyyy early then yeah, you might simply be coming in too slow.
James McMahonParticipantLike Chad said you can rotate the batteries and see if it comes to life. Cleaning all the contacts in there with a little sandpaper is a good way to go too. Try not to cheap out on batteries, lithiums are WELL worth the extra money in these units.
Failing all that, send it to AIM and they will probably have it back to you in under a week. Worth doing since getting the same data from a MC4 is going to cost a few hundred bucks.
James McMahonParticipantLove it Ryon, I think if you have enough time to get everything checked and repaired this thing will surprise people. The Extreme was awesome, you must have a really early one from ’97ish though to have a 40mm. I had a ’99 and it came with a 40mm rear axle. You can get castor pills for it back in the day, they weren’t very common though.
I have another Extreme right now, you can have the spindles and 40mm axle off it. I’m pretty sure the axle is not an OTK axle however so it might be more trouble than its worth.
James McMahonParticipantSlayerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr|
James McMahonParticipantFind myself agreeing with Chris here. What the folks at OGP seems odd.
The coils take a $hit fairly often on the scheme of things, stock or mod compared to CDI’s. Assuming all the wiring is good, I’d suspect coil next, then stator, then perhaps CDI.
FWIW the aftermarket CDI’s with custom mappings (Vortex, SPI etc) use the stock coil so it all seems a bit strange.Keep us updated, im curious to see how this goes.

It looks like Google has demoted these forums from it’s search listings, probably because of all the dead links. It used to be when I’d search google for something related to karting, in the first 10 results there were always a couple of links to EKN. Now there’s nothing.Yeah, it’s a shame. One of the largest discussion repositories for karting, the largest in the US, a body of a decade of work has basically been nulled. Sure the content is there under eknclassic, but that’s not really the point.
I don’t understand why the old forums weren’t kept at the old URL and the new ones under a different one, be it a subdomain or subdirectory. I guess the designers had their reasons for setting up a separate domain (eknclassic).
James McMahonParticipantI have to admit I’ve trashed a few threads rather than persevere and post them. Multiple OS, multiple browsers the response box starts haemorrhaging HTML code.
Sounds like they guys are working on something though? Dave? Rob?
James McMahonParticipantLove it!
James McMahonParticipantAt this point all I have to say is that there is MUCH more to presentation than the track surface. Yes its important, but really I think its the minds behind the running of the show that REALLY make the difference.

James McMahonParticipantMyLaps have been posted…..
http://www.mylaps.com/en/events/tag-racing-international–championship-enduro-series/107402Point standings are almost complete, some final checks to be done before they get published.
James McMahonParticipantKeith, a lot of what you have above, and even more besides is within the scope of kartpulse.
Yes, its a lot of time. Two months in now. Getting there though… I will stress, my goal is to build a platform. I believe content will come with time if the platform is built correctly. That’s not to say it will be empty at launch, but the launch will merely be the beginning.
James McMahonParticipantA lot of orgs ban lead shot, yes at the least you would need to figure out a way to plug it properly.
James McMahonParticipantAFAIK the COTA board is waiting to hear back from one of their members.
Gotta remember the kind of organization you are dealing with here.James McMahonParticipantIn fairness though I don’t that explains the reduced amount of shifters, or pro-opens…
James McMahonParticipantTemp is something to consider. I had a mount come off a painted radiator at 180F.
From the 3M VHB page…
Temperature Resistance:
Short Term (minutes, hours): 250°F (121°C)
Long Term (days, weeks): 200°F (93°C)Remember that this is assuming you have near perfect conditions for bonding which you will probably not.
James McMahonParticipantI think there is an element of the event becoming a little stagnent. Hopefully I’m not offending too many people there, but my gut does say it might be time for some sort of a shake up. I don’t think changing things would affect its idenity as the RIGP. If it’s an awesome race and spectacle in Rock Island, then it’s the RIGP.
As for shifters, in retrospect I should have pounded pavement at Blackhawk and talked to those 47 drivers and found out a little about what it might take to get them to rock island, even just to watch at first. Some might say thats a conflict of interest between series/orgs/events or whatever, but I think due to the fact that its a street race we need to view this as a promotional tool for the sport.
I still feel there are too many events in a compressed timeframe in the midwest. Needs to be more co-operation and co-ordination between tracks, drivers, orgs and series. I’m working on a platform to hopefully facilitate that. Whether it gets used is another thing!
James McMahonParticipantFront of the frame is a good spot for it too. Dont think you’ll get 20 on there though. Maybe 10, then put the remainder on the seat. You can usually put 5lbs underneath the seat between it and the center frame rail.
James McMahonParticipantMcdonalds is more popular than a lot of burger joints….. Nothing wrong with McDonalds, it just might not be for everyone. Sure there’s strength in numbers but I think that making a decision based on how popular something seems on a national scale may not be the best way to go.
Again, it really comes down to where you plan running your kart, and personal preference. Across the nation, for sure the most talked about is spec\stock moto there’s no denying that. On the other hand the last race I attended out my way had just shy of 50 shifters, I would say less than 10 were bona-fide stockers, rest were KZ/ICC/Mod and I think we might have had a yammie 250 four cycle shifter or two as well.
A stocker won that race incidentally…..James McMahonParticipantI don’t know what more you can do with pro-open Roger. The UAS rules are tried and tested, what gives?
You could allow shifters I guess, so that someone could run a CR250 or something, but really we are talking about bringing in another couple of entries there at most.
Lack of shifters is really interesting. They are out there, there were 47 at Blackhawk in August. I know for our group/team the key issue with the RIGP is the lack of track time. That’s the nature of the beast I though, I mean who doesn’t want more track time?
One person said to me that perhaps things have gotten a bit predictable with the event? That somewhat struck a chord with me. Is it time to shakeup the layout in some way? I know this is a big task… but maybe it’s time? I do feel that the buzz for the event needs to be recreated in some way. I say this with reservation because it is still an AWESOME event.
James McMahonParticipantFully aware that HPD are not the sole supplier, the prices I quoted above were from sharkshifter and extreme.
James McMahonParticipantI think Eric gave a fairly balanced POV in his post.
Good\fresh used stockers seem to go for about $2500-2800 for ’99 cylinders. Maybe as much as $3500-3800 for a “badass” ’01 motor.
Build it yourself kit, brand new, $2375 (sans pipe, mount and other peripherals)
Brand new, assembled $3900 upwardsJames McMahonParticipantChris, the title of link I posted is “2013 Honda North American Motorsports Overview”. From that context, I interpret the release as being a statement of intent and commitment for ’13 and no further than that unless expressly stated. I’m not saying the end is nigh, they’ll probably (hopefully) do the same for ’14. Just making the point that this is the closest thing I have seen to a commitment from HPD, and its stands as being one year, each year.
James McMahonParticipantChris, breath before you type. I’m merely paraphrasing what Honda\HPD published on their own website..
Karting
AHM and HPD make Honda CR125 engine parts and rebuild kits available to kart racers and builders throughout the United States via The Honda Racing Line. The Honda two-stroke engine is used in the popular Spec Honda/Stock Moto classes by a variety of karting sanctioning bodies. The Honda Racing Line offers racers a new source for CR125 parts, engine-rebuild kits and technical support. HPD works with sanctioning bodies to ensure the Honda CR125 program continues to grow and succeed.
As in 2012, HPD will again offer support programs for competitors using the Honda CR125 engine package during the SKUSA ProTour and WKA Dunlop Tire Road Race series seasons, as well as all SKUSA PKC series.
HPD also offers an exciting and innovative new package, a fuel-injected, four-stroke CRF250 engine, featuring a complete engine/chassis install kit to help get racers on track. The CRF250 provides longer intervals between top-end changes, and offers the ease of using pump gas, resulting in an unmatched driving experience.
James McMahonParticipantHPD is making the parts for the CR125 Stock Moto “kit” available and so far has been committing to do so on a year-by-year basis.
