Ambitious? Yes! Absurd? Apparently not….
James McMahonParticipantPaul I’ve only glossed over this thread, but will say this.. …
Something to keep in mind is that at the higher level events, the grip level is such that there is actually an adhesive effect between the tires and track. They are literally “stuck” together in a manner that makes merely unloading much less effective than you would expect with the “frictional” traction you deal with at a local event.James McMahonParticipantLSD, now available as a Chrome plugin?
James McMahonParticipantFor now you can use google to search within a site, or specific URL, and pray it got indexed.
keyword site:https://new.ekartingnews.com/forums/forum/classifieds/
For example to search for tonykart, use this in the search box
tonykart site:https://new.ekartingnews.com/forums/forum/classifieds/James McMahonParticipantThere are rules that clearly state that this kind of behavior is frowned upon. But, I don’t think the punishment fits the crime, way too heavy handed.
..Second thought, he did stop pretty damn close to the track there. 20-30ft into the grass wouldn’t have been a bad idea.
James McMahonParticipantKT100’s, you’d see them talked about on 4cycle.com, but it seems their historical posts are gone.
What was his reasoning behind PP’s making more power? I guess you could maybe make more peak power than some reeds, but overall, at least in my experience with karting the PP’s were never as fast as reeds or rotaries. At least a second off on a sprint track with a 20lb break.James McMahonParticipantThere’s no dilemma. Reed will nearly always make more power, over a wider band with more overrev because the inlet timing isn’t as compromised. Whatever the instructor’s experiences were I’m guessing there were other factors at play aside from induction type.
If PP made more power, guys wouldn’t be adding reeds to “stock appearing” PP motors ;)

James McMahonParticipantMatthew if you can try to avail of that race Jimmy McNeil mentions. It really sounds like you need to get to an event to help your decision along.
James McMahonParticipantIf you have a pumparound carb they have a tendency to flood the crankcase if the fuel level in the tank is high enough.
Solutions include keep the fuel level low(er) in the tank, or put a valve in the line to toggle it on and off.James McMahonParticipantI sit corrected, the kit is in fact $2300, at least from Extreme.
That said you would need to purchase your carb, exhaust, silencer, motor mount, drive gear and other odds and ends to get it ready to bolt on and run. By the time you’ve bought all that I would guess you would be at $3000 easy enough.
James McMahonParticipantHard to say. You will be assembling from absolute scratch, cases, gears, clutch, crank, etc. etc. The kit is a box of over 300 parts. I’m trying to find it online…. but not having any luck.
James McMahonParticipantSame fuel and composition, still fresh? Could be a lot of things, assuming ambient temp is staying roughly the same some things to consider are..
Failing water pump…
Gunked up\corroded rad internals
Blocked\crudded up rad fins (external)
Air leak in motor or carb causing it to run leaner
Ignition issue that has added advanceOctober 14, 2013 at 1:01 pm in reply to: Would you be interested in onboard live video stream back to the pits? #12800James McMahonParticipantSo are you planning analog or digital signal over wireless?
I think without an elevated antenna of some description that both receiver and transmitter are pointed at are going to be at the complete and total mercy of the lay of the land, literally.
FCC’s “input” could have some fun implications too.Cool that you are pursing this though
James McMahonParticipantHi Michael and welcome…..
Used cost on a Stock Moto engine package seems to be around, $2800 however they seem to have dropped a little of late. Here’s what I posted in another thread…
Used about $2500 with a ’99 cylinder, probably $2800-$3500 (or more) with an ’01.
New kit (you assemble and prepare) $2800 for the 99kit, add another $400ish of you want ’01.
Brand spanking new and assembled $3800-$5500 (and beyond).
Rebuild interval is a contentious subject, but I would say 25hrs on a top end and perhaps two tops before changing the bottom would be a good rule of thumb. Many claim to run their top ends much as 50hrs in a stock moto when being used as a practice donkey, tread carefully there. Like I say, opinions as well as situations vary a lot. If you are running hard and competitively look at changing top end every 5hrs or so.I think most would agree that running a quality leaded racing gas and racing oil will help ensure the motor stays in good shape, especially those bearings that you cant inspect visually down the bottom. Periodic inspections of the internals of any motor that’s having the living daylights revved out of it is a good idea.
Provided your cylinder is still in good shape you could do a top end yourself and have change out of $150.
Chassis wise, if the Birel or Corsa range is working for you with your existing fleet and you have good contacts and support, I think stick with those brands.
James McMahonParticipantI think its a great question and I’ve often wondered myself. I guess most endup buried in garages. Shame in many ways as they could be given to schools, youth programs and soforth and have a new lease of life.
James McMahonParticipantSeems like a classic case of caveat emptor here. Am I understanding correctly when I say you bought the gears, didn’t check them but then also sold them without checking?
You can always ask for your money back (assuming you are able to reach him) and in an ideal world you would get a refund. Given that it’s been two years you are unlikely to entertained by any reasonable seller who sold them in good faith, let alone someone who might have been intentionally disingenuous.
Really it comes down to a question of how much hassle/stress/time the money is worth to you. I’m with the Chris’, chalk it down to experience and move on.
October 8, 2013 at 11:06 am in reply to: Would you be interested in onboard live video stream back to the pits? #12311James McMahonParticipantAm I understanding correctly that this is a device that takes the analog video and audio outputs from a GoPro (for example) , then transmits the video wirelessly?
Tell us more about the underlying wireless technology?
480p is perfectly acceptable if its a GOOD 480p delivered at a decent bitrate.
Keep in mind that for racing many orgs have banned “telemetry”. Of course this could still be used in testing.James McMahonParticipant1) Who actually here promotes/promoted a RR event?? Not talking about helping at the event. Doing it all.
I haven’t “done it all”, but I’ve been heavily involved with the promotion, tech\comms, timing\scoring and points aspects of CES with Dave. Enough to remind me of what I already knew, organizing these events is an absolutely colossal effort. This is one reason why it irks me when people bring profit into this. For the work thats done to get these events going, as drivers we should be OK with people making money from this when/if they can.
On that path, I’ve been developing ideas and tools to use technology and the web to make things more efficient leading up to and during a race weekend. A lot done but still a lot more to do. This is also something I’d like to see kartpulse take the lead on: tooling race organizers for success.
2) Anyone know how rather it’s a organization, club, etc. gets insurance ??Im no expert on the matter, but I know enough to understand there is a lot of BS talked about it and I feel it’s often used by some orgs as an excuse/scapegoat for things they would rather not deal with. So they say its an “insurance thing”
4) How many RR events do you attend a year??
4-5 depending on schedule, budget, whos running it and where its being run. I try to throw a couple of sprints in if I can.5) What area of the country??
Midwest unless I have a compelling reason to spend the extra dough to make a trip elsewhere (example USKGP)6) Who is/has been in the politics as a board member (IKF, KART, WKA, CES)?? Does CES have a board (not sure).
CES don’t have a board perse. This could be a good or bad thing depending on how you want to read into it. So far, its working IMO. Dave runs a pretty accommodating series.James McMahonParticipantThis is a handy excel sheet for calculating gear ratios vs RPMs and speed if you are looking to kill time:
http://www.kartweb.com/TechArt/honda_gearmaster.htmJames McMahonParticipantRod have you called Margay? I’m sure they would be happy to give you some pointers over the phone too.
James McMahonParticipantGoddamit, original link was truncated by the forums. Replaced with a smarturl.
James McMahonParticipantFor sure it’s been quiet on this, but my gut says this will be a runner. Dealing with an an event (and venue/management) like this is an ardous task.
Let’s keep talking about this! Continue to encourage those that are interested in filling out the form: http://smarturl.it/USKGPatCOTA
I made a couple of changes to reflect the status of things with this, and “updated” the link to point to this newer thread. If there are concerns about duplicates then just add that to the text and I will check.
Status board is not available right now, but I can say that based on what we originally discussed it looks like its in good shape as far as interest is concerned.James McMahonParticipantI’ve only skimmed though the thread, but I’ll leave these nuggets..
As drivers we need to forget WKA for Road Racing. Seriously. For more reasons than I can count. Too much BS, too much hierarchy. At this point, I could care less about their involvement in the past. Their legacy with RR is great but the road ahead, based on their rules and general attitude towards RR says to me they don’t deserve the support of drivers. Multi event “national” championships are a thing of the past, maybe (distant) future but not the sustainable present.
A lot of events need to drop the “National” monkier, its tired, old and pathetic.For-Profit/Non-Profit has little to do with making money. Don’t be fooled into thinking otherwise.
Higher entry fees are a feasible and legitimate damage limitation measure if the drivers dedicated to the event or series are onboard with it. If handled correctly it won’t be perceived as gauging.
Resource pooling is a must. When the USKGP @ COTA was announced I did some research into tools that could be used to help facilitate ride/transport sharing. It’s something that I have shelved for phase 1 for kartpulse.com, but it may move up the order for phase 2 if there is enough interest.
Road racing is viewed as “dangerous” by many sprinters. I don’t share that view however perception = reality. Until this perception changes, RR will be in the minority.
As drivers we need to get together, reach a consensus and call the shots. Recent history has told me that getting the organizers of the various events on the same page in a collaborative manner is not going to happen. So, drivers need to group together and take the reins (sp?). We need to vote with our feet in a pre-emptive and public manner. I’m struggling to articulate what I’m thinking of here, but hopefully you will get the idea. In essence some clubs/orgs aren’t getting it and we need to lead the way by supporting orgs, rules and schedules that make sense.
More incoherent ramblings to follow.
