I have a 5 x 8 enclosed. It works great but can be small at times. I have to load/unload the entire trailer to get the kart in and out. Rear Wheels and plastic bumper have to be removed to load the kart, which is a PITA if your in a hurry. A bigger trailer is next but dont know when that will be, just bought the truck to pull it with.

in reply to: Moving from rotax to 125 shifter any advice? #36238

When i was looking to jump up i talked to a guy who had both. He said his rotax cost around double the price of a shifter just bc parts are so expensive. In the end it depends what level you want to run at. I guess im around 1500 a year including tires and fuel. But i only race 9 club events and a couple practice days.

I have no opinion on brands but i do on price. I bought an hjc 4 years ago for $100. Good helmet but i am looking to replace it already for a couple reasons. Its falling apart, im not saying im rough with it but debris in the face does add up. Second and a big deal to me now is weight. I run a shifter and the g’s to go with it. After a 10 minute race my shoulder/neck are exhausted. Much of this is physical condition but a lighter helmet would help alot.

I have a 2001 for sale but shipping would double the price of the chassis.  Think I got my pads at acceleration karting.

If you need to rebuild brakes, you need “cup seals” behind the pistons and any parts store can order them.  Just need someone smart enough to help.

It’s all about the lack of leadership.  I say that bc where is the promotion of IKF?  I see little to none.  I race with Britt above at the club level.  We host two gold cup events and the can am series.  I had to go to our home track schedule to see when gold cup was in town.  Had no intention of going bc no one shows up.  Now can am was all over eKartingNews.com,  couple other Facebook feeds, etc.   Showed up and saw a crg trailer, packed parking, people in the stands.  It felt and looked like a big event, IKF has none of that.  In today’s world IKF is stale and out of touch, it appears from the outside.

Yes a shifter is that intense.  The biggest hurdle is the amount of thinking involved bc of the gears.  The other issue is strength/conditioning.  U should have an advantage bc of motocross but don’t be surprised when u get overwhelmed.

As said above.  If u haven’t been to the track , that is step one.  Pick a class with people in it bc racing by your self sucks.

if it doesn’t go in gear, hit the shifter harder!!!  :)   I don’t know about an 80 but a 125 is next to bullet proof.  im on year number three and the previous owner didn’t have a clue when the tranny was rebuilt when I bought it.

but you are right, get off the gas and back on as quick as you can going up in gear.  bang on it going down.

two things that helped me that have not been said…

get an angle plate for your steering wheel, which helped the most for me.  im at 15 degrees

2nd, use the palm on the outside hand when turning.  I don’t remember where I say this comment and if it is true.  I don’t know if I even do it but it seems logical and reduces the strength and fatigue of the grip.

Bill, your opinion is correct in my book as well. as long as you are not making a correlation between price and protection factor. In safety equipment price has little to do with the protection factor of a properly working piece. What price does do is increase build quality which increases durability. It also increases comfort which increases the likely hood someone will wear it.

Thanks guys. I ordered a set of those last night. Thats what I was referring to from the beginning but that video was the only thing I could find.

Just surprised drilling in to the helmet is approved.

You learn far more about racing and kart tuning the second year. If you change classes you leave that experiance on the table. Ask me how I know…

He is 15, keep him his current class for next year. During next season figure out where he wants to go.

To address the other thing you mentioned…. Paying money. In the end it takes money to win money. Once that is the case racers like myself lose all interest because I cannot compete at that level. This is a hobby for most, once you introduce money I am not going to deal with the a– holes that come with it. I would put money on it that there are far more of me then the a–holes. If you chase all of us away who are you going to race? Racing is a bore when just a few show up.

Yes this is a huge generalization and is more then just racing inspired. If you want money, go race in one of the regional events where $2500 in expenses, just to compete, is a drop in the bucket.

I’m in the same boat Jon. I only have two races left so hopefully it will last. Over the winter ill get a longer bolt and take the mount off the kart (hopefully onto a new chassis). Good to know I’m not the only one.

The first time I broke it the bolt went in from the outside so it came completely came out. Next time on the track I snapped two wires on the cdi box. Took a while to figure out the wires broke, sadly I didn’t know it was because of the bolt so I did it a second time.
