Briggs & Stratton 206 Spring Rule Update
Effective immediately
Recently we were contacted by a dealer about a spring from a 206 engine that did not meet our current .930” length rule. When checking this part, we noted that it passed our 100% audit process, the difference being how we check our springs in production verses a caliper and or the ¼” tech tool A-15 used in the field. In order to better match our process to the field, we will be reworking our test method as well as adjusting the free length to remove any worry on the part of our racers.
A spring’s free length is not a critical measurement in itself but in combination with our min./max. ID controls and visual coil winding check it allows a tech official to verify that competitors are using OEM Briggs & Stratton springs. “Valve spring free length within this newly specified range has no effect on performance given the 6,100 rpm rev limiter. This tolerance is well within the designed pressures required for the engine yet not excessive to cause any measurable frictional losses.”
The new free length will go from .930” to .940” effective immediately.
This is racing as usual and by adjusting the free length it allows our racers to race without the need to worry about their engine not meeting spec. Race on!
