The X30 class is certainly enjoying a great deal of momentum, Kirt. The growth of the IAME program nationwide is helping to fuel the support of the Man Cup, as you can expect many of the drivers in this week’s field to run the SKUSA Pro Tour as well. When you have a motor that can cross over between different sanctioning bodies and series, you’ll often see growth and support.
Rob HowdenKeymasterHey guys,
Based on the entry sheets we have in front of us, they are 256 entries as of practice day. Pro IAME Senior tops the list with a stellar 47 entries, while LO206 Senior hit the magic 40 number. Great stuff.
I’ll be monitoring this thread all week and will be posting the top-10 finishers from all official sessions as well.
Rob HowdenKeymasterI have Mike Birdsell building me a 1982 Margay Xpert II right now, and we’re going to put a Yamaha on it. I hope to get it out to a couple events in 2016.
Rob HowdenKeymasterMark,
I would expect that they were busy preparing for, and then traveling to, Portugal for the Rotax Grand Finals event that is being run this coming week. I have notified back of this message so that he can connect with you.
Rob HowdenKeymaster
Thanks for clearing that up Rob. Bummer that karting has become such a land grab for such a small island. We’re all in it together and when these splits happen we all loose. EKN is still my first click when I want my karting fix.
Howie…it’s just a land grab for the big spenders, about 3% of the community. That’s why you see lot of Briggs LO206 four-cycle, Yamaha KT100, road racing and industry news on the site these days. There’s loads of karting in the sport, and club and regional races with as many drivers at what’s in Vegas right now.
Heck, the finale at my local club had 140 drivers for a single day event, the Oktoberfest Grand Prix. I was slow and uncompetitive this time around, but I had a blast. And I’ll be back next year. #OperationGrassroots
Rob HowdenKeymasterThis is really just a straight up deal. There is no blackout or boycott. Maxspeed is free to submit articles and news releases to EKN and we’ll consider them for posting.
That said, there is no longer a working partnership either. MaxSpeed dissolved its official media partnership with EKN last fall, right between the SKUSA SuperNationals and the Rotax Grand Finals, without letting us know. We were obviously disappointed with the way it went down, but in the end, they elected to partner with a different news site. That’s their perogative, of course. I had some great discussions with MaxSpeed’s Garret Potter after the fact, we discussed some potential options to move forward, but nothing came together, and the door remains open for them to send us news and releases. If you ‘search’ our site, you’ll see all of the official information that MaxSpeed sent us.
The open door remains, as they can send us previews, reports or whatever. We just haven’t received anything from this weekend.
Guys, we work diligently to support the community and the industry and we do so by forming positive partnerships. We’ve been extremely lucky to partner with events like the Rock Island Grand Prix for 15+ years, we’ve worked closely with Superkarts! USA since the late 90s and we have extended coverage and support efforts with Andy Seesemann at the Challenge of the Americas and Mark Coats and his USPK program. Our growing partnership with Dave Klaus and Briggs & Stratton is extremely important to us and it’s helping to stabilize grassroots karting around the country. We are working on a new program with the WKA that we’re thrilled about, and you’re going to hear news of an exciting karting event at IMS that will expose and promote karting to a new demographic. We have always been about win-win symbiotic partnerships. We’re always looking to add more partnerships with regional and club programs around the country. We’re also a business that needs to be fiscally responsible, and every time we leave the office, it costs us money.
Finally, We are more than just about sharing photos or videos. EKN is focused on original articles, industry insider editorial and promoting the sport itself. And when we get a chance to be trackside, we work non-stop to provide live audio coverage, immediate session updates and in-depth race reports that can become the archived history of our sport.
We enjoyed a multi-year partnership with US Rotax, and we provided lots of unique editorial. That partnership is no longer active, but we’ll keep publishing the information that is provided to us.
Rob HowdenKeymasterThese are all interesting point, guys. I’ve often wondered something….can we undo the affect to driving standards by getting rid of the rear bumper ad penalizing heavy for contact from the rear? Or…have we opened Pandora’s box and it will be solely the responsibility of strict race penalties that will clean up the sport?
I know that most people have zero desire to be a Race Director, but I’d love to try it for a weekend event. I think I’ve been in the sport long enough to be the right level of cynical. I feel that I’d drop the hammer pretty hard to get my position made and clean up the racing. Anyone else feel this way?
Rob HowdenKeymasterThank you, Ty. I love getting any input, and I do like the idea of explaining to the viewers that the drivers are very in tune with their karts, and will use their on-board DA dash to watch the engine temps, and to adjust their racing lines based on their split times etc. I love it. I’ve made a note for the next broadcast.
Rob HowdenKeymasterI appreciate reading the positive input and responses, for sure, because that’s the stuff that we’ll look to continue. As for constructive criticism and ideas, these are important as well. We took many of the ideas from the responses on the SuperNationals broadcasts into these new shows, and I think the improvement and evolution was very apparent.
As for being able to show more racing and more classes, that’s just not something we can get around without going to a 60-minute show, which can only happen with a much larger investment by SKUSA, or vastly increased sponsorship/commercial funding. That will be tough. That said, I’m being told that we’ll focus on different classes each day during the two SummerNationals broadcasts from New Castle, so the exposure will be spread among more of the drivers.
The primary key to me is that the effort continue into the future. SKUSA has put karting on TV and we need to support them so that this will continue. If they can make this a constant in their program, it will be a huge player in bringing our sport to the next level, both in terms of exposure and prestige and professionalism, and in educating the masses in regards to the viability of karting as a motorsports destination.
Rob HowdenKeymasterAlways sad to see any racing facility shut down, especially such a quality track like MMP. They’ve also be the central point for karting in Utah. Sucks for those drivers.
Rob HowdenKeymasterThe first show will be available on http://www.motortrendondemand.com/ this week at some point. We’ll post it here once it’s made available.
Rob HowdenKeymasterThe first installment of the SKUSA SuperNats coverage package is being shown again, twice, on Sunday, April 19 at 9:30 pm ET and 1:30 am ET. Check their site for broadcast times for upcoming shows:

The Internet is full of lots of information if you take a minute to search for it. ;-) Although we’re always here to help out our readers.
