Mike PetersParticipant
Jennings is a motorcycle only track. They will not rent to Kart racers. Track owner policy
Mike PetersParticipantPutz Eng clutch. if he rebuilt it beware. Last time I sent him a clutch that he was supposed to completely rebuild, it came back with the same burnt warped parts in it. He just washed the discs & soda blasted the floaters.
Mike PetersParticipantJust got off the phone with Gary & Scott at Horstman. The axle clutch is still very much a go. It may not be available to the sprint sit up road race crowd due to stall speed rules but it will be available in for the Laydown crowd for 1 1/4″ axles.
Clutches should be available mid January 2017. Target price is in the $900 range.
Gary told me the staff at Horstman would be more than happy to discuss the project with anyone. Just give them a call
Mike PetersParticipantOk now a rumor is floating around that the intro of the new batch of Horstman clutches has been canceled.
Mike PetersParticipantI’ll be there both weekends with a new nose & a carb that works this time
Mike PetersParticipantIt’s not a Rotax, but it is water cooled. The X30 is an IAME/Parilla. Initial cost is a bit more but maint is less. I agree air cooled is a lot less hassle. Ran a pair of Atlas reed valves on my GPX200 back 30 years ago.
Mike PetersParticipant2 Yamaha’s make only a little more HP than 1 Reedjet. Might work with a pair of Comer P51’s but kind of iffy. The new X30 laydown class might be a better choice. Almost as fast as a B-Stock. Weight is 410#. The CKI that Lindsey Read drove at Daytona last year weighs about 230#. Add your 125# plus gear & your getting close. Alum fuel tanks will add some. Pretty easy to get to 410#. BTW Lindsey weighs about the same as you & ran with 5# of lead to make 385# to run F125
Mike PetersParticipantYou probably wont save too much buying one used unless you find a fantastic deal. I bought 3 used ones & by the time I rebuilt them I had more money in each one of them than the target price of the new Horstman. But Good luck anyway. You might try the “Wanted to buy” section of the classified.
Mike PetersParticipantHead to Daytona in Dec. Usually a dozen or so Stock Honda’s there for the Road Race
Mike PetersParticipantThe person to ask is John Klutz at CKI. The pipe/header that will be spech’d is actually an RLV setup made for the X30 in a laydown. It is a close copy of the IAME setup. At the spec length for the flex which is shorter than for sprints the motor pipe combo makes about 36 hp. I was told this would be a X30 motor only class. Engine rules will mirror the sprint tag rules for the X30 with some changes to make it work for a laydown. The choice of the X30 only was to keep costs down. The test kart was run for 7 race weekends before a new piston was fitted. The piston still had coating on it & was turning fast times. The bottom end has yet to be rebuilt after roughly 1 1/2 years of testing. The drivers for the testing were picked from the top road race drivers in the nation.
I bought my motor package new for under $2600.
-Complete engine with electronics minus clutch & no starter
-RLV header, pipe & flex
-Water pump & belts
-1990 Ford Aerostar heater core
– Hegar hub & drive gears
Hope this helps
Mike PetersParticipantThe last time I spoke to Tom he wasn’t interested unless someone or a group placed an order for at least 100 clutches.
Mike PetersParticipantThanks Lynn.
I spoke with Scott & Gary yesterday & they confirmed everything you said here. Scott & I raced GPX200 karts with the SCK crowd 30 years ago. Ran my first kart race in a very long time at the WKA Grand Nationals at Atlanta Motorsports Park. Strapped an IAME X30 to a CKI laydown Chassis & what a ride that was. I had just finished breaking the motor in & was getting used to the handling of the package when the clutch let go. Millions of love bugs & mosquitos lost there lives in the column of smoke behind me. The yellow jackets where unimpressed.
On a side note: It would be nice if they could increase the gear ratio range down to say 3.2 for the Daytona crowd. The X30 runs around 3.4 & the B Stock crowd are down in the 3.2 range.
Mike PetersParticipantThe guy that sells new batteries for the transponders for $55 on ebay will make you a new case for about $20
Mike PetersParticipantDepends on who made the seat & what resin they used.
Mike PetersParticipantJim or anyone else,
Know of any video from a kart or from a kart perspective?
Here is one from the bumper of a sports car
Mike PetersParticipantburp
Mike PetersParticipantKelly,
Yup I’ll be running the X30. I’m being told to run 3 teeth more than Sportsman on the driver. Smallest driver for the motor is an 18. gonna need some serious weight for the clutch.
Mike PetersParticipantI believe this person is attempting to scam me.
Messaged me on ekarting then on my home email 3x
Mike PetersParticipantDid you find a replacement motor Robert?
Mike PetersParticipantThe info would be much more helpful if I knew the gear for Kershaw
Mike PetersParticipantBump for a friend
