Also, if you’re not stuck on TAG, check out LO206. Slower, but the class at my track has some seriously fun racing going on in it.

Also make sure the kart is well-sorted, whether that be by checking it’s overall condition, or driving it before buying. Nothing worse than buying a kart and having problem after problem to frustrate the heck out of you.

Since you’re just starting out, I’d see what the locals are running as far as chassis and engines that way if you run into any problems they can help you out.  As far as complete vs roller, there really isn’t a big difference, it’s not too hard to install an engine/wiring harness.  I had a kart shop do mine the first time to make sure I avoided any common mistakes, but after that I’ve taken it off/put it back on multiple times.

Thanks Tony, it is one of the folding types, about 55 lbs. Any estimate on cost? I’m seeing about having someone ship it to me, so I’m trying to get a ballpark before I pull the trigger.

The reason karting has become so fragmented is because karters led it to be. Think about it: if everyone brushed off new engine packages and stayed with the tried and trues: Briggs, K100s, Stock Hondas, what have you, would we be having this discussion? No. For some reason (unbeknownst to me) people almost seem to enjoy switching motors, or there are others who feel it necessary to cheat to win a plastic trophy, discouraging others. Someone earlier had it right, doing things short-term is idiotic and leads to long-term failure in many arenas in life. I’m amazed that something like karting, which is so damn fun, cannot gain traction with people.

Bottom line is until classes are condensed, rules are agreed upon (seriously what is up with the !@#$ measuring contest between sanctioning bodies?), and things stay relatively the same (maybe only small, inexpensive changes made based upon RELIABILITY and EASE OF USE), we’re mired in what we’ve got: a big piece of glass shattered into millions of pieces, all seemingly bickering with one another.

As a lowly club racer, I’m waiting to see what the people in my area are doing. I’m not opposed to buying the upgrades for my engine, but I also may be switching out to LO206, only time will tell.

I like that idea, I might give it a shot when I get back after the holidays.

Ended up spraying it with WD40 and using a long metal rod and hammer to beat it into the frame as the bolt wasn’t budging from the middle.

    Tim,

I LOVE your stands, and plan on having one at some point. I’m a firm believer in “buy once, cry once” but having just moved from FL to TX (where my father used to go racing with me and subsequently help) my budget is tighter than I’d like :(. I look forward to owning a KartLift in the near future though (but will probably go with the manual model due to lower weight as I still run out of the back of my pickup so it would need to sit in my bed along with my kart). I always read what your son and yourself have to say on here, and really appreciate what you guys do to dispel myths and educate other karters, Happy holidays to you and your family :)

    Eric,

I’ll be running with HCKC as I’m in San Antonio now. Bo if I ever make the drive from FL to TX (or vice versa) again, I will def take you up on that offer!
