Chonda Shifter?  Cool…  I like my WF but two expensive rod failures in an hour has me thinking.

Motors are pretty easy to come by.  Just need to get someone making and selling a mount, sprockets and exhaust.  Not a lot of folks can do this kind of fab work so I doubt it’ll catch until everything is available as a bolt-on.

EDIT:  Looks like standard sprockets are 428.  One problem down…the second nearly done and then we need an exhaust kit.  Hmmm….

Walt – if sanding made a difference, the plating was already gone.

Same here.  One thing I’ve learned is that weight balance can often be a problem – we have more weight further back and that overloads the chassis.  For me, moving weight forwards was necessary to get things to just start to work properly…

Most body shops with a frame jig can straighten the frame – the real question regards the amount of damage that has to be done bending the metal back to get the frame straight again.  The metal can only bend so far before it weakens significantly and the front wheel isn’t someplace you want to risk having a sudden stress fracture at.

Definitely worth a look.  Good to see Kubica getting around again and it looks like he’s doing really well.  Except for the crash part…  :)

I’m not sure I agree.  The old Firestone YFx tires were pretty darn good and the sidewalls were only 0.25″ shorter as the tires were 1/2″ bigger OD at 11.5″.  I’d offer that tire availability is what drives the 5″ size decision by today’s racers and that ‘business realities’ are what killed off the 6″ tires in the first place.

Not trying to stir the pot – this is just my experience.

I priced it out and IIRC you can replace almost every wear item with new for about $650.  Head, block, everything.  Just keep the intake, exhaust, ignition and exterior bits and the rest is basically new.  A motor that’s not in that bad of shape might not need much more than Alan describes.  For a play motor, it’s hard to understand why it matters if it’s new or not.

Spent $750 to have my block align-bored to first over and put a new head on mine.  Ran great afterwards and that’s a lot cheaper than a grand but I didn’t get a box of good spares from the deal.  <shrug>  Dono.

It’s sort of like Jeff Glover, or something else that’s left over from the early 80s.  At least one of those guys did a stint in cars.  If we’re going back that far to make up fake names, why not steal from Brad Lackey?  That dude was Steve McQueen cool.

On topic – I think that one of the things that Chris has overlooked is the need to have the ends of the tube cut straight and not at an angle.  A good machinist never questions this and forgets about a guy working on the backporch using a hacksaw to cut tube held between the knees that just ain’t ever gonna get a straight cut.

Good quality pipe nipples will work in a pinch for tube sections lathe cut to length.   Brass helps to avoid dings on the crank surfaces.  The recommendation to use a bolt with a big washer on the crank side and a nut with a big washer on the clutch side is very good also.  Easy.
