    Daniel,

Sorry, I misunderstood what you said about the coil. I thought you meant the grounding bolt on the coil came loose causing a intermittent no spark.

I have seen the problems your having with your clutch baskets/drums. I have bought aftermarket clutch baskets from comet and never had that problem but did notice that they seem to wear out faster then the original Horstman stuff so I went back to buying there stuff and there’s very little price difference between them. I will say though when I service my clutch I take those bolts out and re-locktite them back in place. If your having a lot of repeat failures one other thing you might want to try is buying  a one piece drum and gear assembly. That would eliminate that from ever happening again.

I’ve seen people have the problem you’re talking about with the starter. I think it is inherit to that design. If you remember old fords they had the same problem and used that same style solenoid I remember taking the solenoids apart to sand down the copper disk that would weld itself to the contact point of course now I think there riveted and not screwed together.

I have had the same thing happen to me with used engines. Only raced twice of course what they don’t tell you is they practiced six times for a total of eight hours or the chain broke and it went to 16000 RPM! Unfortunately I find it harder and harder to trust people anymore. (sad) Which is why I switched to buying new stuff its only more expensive if you don’t have a problem with the used stuff, but as you and I  have found out its just as expensive to buy someone else’s junk and then have to rebuild it as it is to buy new. Racing is just to hard on things.

    Good luck racing!

No offence but most of your Yamaha problems seem self induced. It sounds to me if you removed a rag and used a torque wrench and locktite most of your problems would have gone away.

Here’s what it cost me to run a Yamaha:

    1 New Woltjer KT100  $1850.

    1 New Horstman HDC5B CLUTCH $320.

Every 3 to 4 races take the clutch apart. check the bushing, gear, basket and clutch clearance $5. to $80 depending on needed repairs.

Every couple of races rebuild carb $6.

Every 10 Hours send the engine back to Woltjers for complete rebuild approx. $ 600. Yes they do were out fast which is why your used motor probably blew up so quickly.

Overall still much cheaper then running Rotax.

Your absolutely right we are moving from Yamaha Jr. and its can to Yamaha Sr. and the pipe. We have been practicing with the pipe for a while now and she loves it much better mid-range and a little more top end not to mention the can sounds obnoxious and sprays oil all over everything. So yes I know the pipe is worth almost 2 seconds on our track but do you think it makes a difference to how the motor is made? I have 2 Woltjers engines and Daniel asked what we ran so at that time we used a can and that’s what he built them to do.What can really change?  They’re the same specs right? Would he have made changes if I said a pipe?( I GUESS HE WOULD SINCE HE ASKED) Maybe I should call him to find out. 1 of them needs to be sent back to him  for a rebuild so I guess I will find out  if it is faster then it was when it was built for a can.

WHAT: My daughter will be running Yamaha Sr. this year.

WERE:  We will be running regionally at the GoPro Motorplex (Mooresville NC) running there GoPro karting challenge and when USPKS comes to that track we will take off the WKA Sr. pipe and run the can instead as per there rules. It would be nice if you could run either a can or the pipe and just find a way to weight the pipe accordingly .

WHY: Just as TJ (Back to basics-Kart360.com)and others have said  Price! I want to have fun and make memory’s with my daughter and not go broke in the process!!

What gears are you using? Is your spocket and chain to close to the track? If you are using say a 11/81  maybe try switching to a 10/74  there  close to the same ratio but you would have more ground clearance. Just a thought.

My daughter runs yamaha jr. at the gopro motorplex and we also use the Horstman HDC-5B. I use WD40 I know alot of people use triflow but wd40 is cheap and I use alot of it. Everytime she comes off the track I will soak the drum/crank down and I have never had a clutch slip or failures using it. I found that it is also one of the best cleaners to remove all the oil debri after the race. Do yourself a favor and buy a 1 gallon can and a spray bottle much cheaper then the aresal cans.

My daughter runs Yamaha jr. at MMX and we run anywhere from a 10/75 when track track is bad to a 10/72 on a race day. it really depends on the rubber on the track and what  her rpm is that day I keep adjusting until the motor turns right around 14000 RPM’s her motor seems to run out over 14200. I think Jeremy is right a good number to start with is 10/73 or 11/80 – 11/81. obviously The more speed you can carry out of the turns the lower number gear you can run and the faster you will go, but if you bogg a KT100 down it takes a long time to get your rpm back.

My daughter runs Yamaha Jr.on a  Kosmic Mercury (30mm) and we have had alot of success with it handles well and andjust real well!  If you are looking for a OTK 30mm kart they make 3 brands that all are the same otk parts(chevy, buick, cadilac) the tony kart EVK or the FA kart Victory and what we use the Kosmic kart mercury model. A plus to buying a kosmic is that J3 is at all of the big races and they are based not that far from you in erie PA. I have also seen the top karts do well at the track but I dont know the model. If you google kosmic kart J3 Compitition will come up check out there site and look at the models there. Good Luck maybe we can race you next year at the Gopro Motorplex in NC.
