Sometimes it can spark outside the cylinder but not spark enough under compression. Clean your ground wires and check the plug boot for tightness.

You might just be flooding it. Is the plug wet? Let it dry out and try again. Are you sure it’s getting gas. Pour a little in the plug hole and see if it fires. Could be broken reed, dirty carb, fuel line air leak or popped out crank seal.

When you prop it through by hand does it have allot of resistance? Might have stuck a ring last time you ran it.

It doesn’t seem to have a lot of resistance when I turn it over by hand but definitely has some. Do you know how much compression it’s supposed to have? I have a found a compression gauge I can borrow, just don’t know what number I’m looking for.

Should be about 150 cranking with the throttle wide open but if it’s around 100 it won’t run. Compression gauges vary greatly but it will give you a general idea. If you get a rebuild you can use that gauge to develop your own numbers compared to a new ring.

Update: Compression tester showed 160 psi. so, I think the ring is OK. Still won’t start though.

Tried some fuel in the plug hole and no ignition.

Last race I stripped a drive gear in the final. I saw 16000 on the tach and I thought the rev limiter would protect the engine from over-revving. Is it possible the timing was messed up somehow? I wouldn’t think so since it is gear driven but I’m new to 2 stroke so I’m just grasping at straws at this point.

You could line the magnet up with the coil and see if the piston is near the top but slipping a flywheel is pretty rare on a two stroke. Did you clean/check all the connections?

How good are your eyes? If not very good, put on a pair of magnifiers. Then check the connectors of all your electrical stuff. I’ve found loose pins and blackened pins in a variety of places in my harness. Spray all the pins with deoxit, then tighten the pins with a flat head eyeglass screwdriver.  This cured both mine and another friends non-start condition.

Another possibility: broken reeds. Check those too.

Third possibility – bad stator. Swap with a known good one.

Update: Pulled all the ground wires and scrubbed connectors with wire brush and contact cleaner. Also backed the idle screw almost all the way out and it started!

Long story short I was definitely flooding it… (facepalm)

Thanks for the help anyway guys!
