So Cal Oval Karters Final Race and 2015 Champions
Seven and one half-months after the So Cal Oval Karters opened the 2015 season, they closed the successful campaign on Halloween afternoon at the Perris Auto Speedway. Not only did the race signal the end of the year of racing, it also saw champions crowned in each class.
Bonita’s Matt Martis, who dominated the Senior 4 Cycle Class throughout most of the season, closed the year in championship form by starting fourth and winning the final main event of the year over Riverside teenager Garrett Schill, Aubrey Opelt of Lake Elsinore, Don Holdsworth and Lake Elsinore’s Jason Voss. Oppelt and Lake Elsinore’s Ryan Sherman won the heats and Schill was the main event “Hard Charger.”
For Martis, it was his ninth win in 13 SCOK races in the class this year. The nine wins were also more than any other driver in any class in SCOK in 2015. Voss, who racked up three wins, finished second in the Senior 4 Cycle standings and was 95-points behind the champ at season’s end. Schill, Opelt and Banning’s Desiree Gaynor placed third through fifth in the final point count for the year.
Zach Burris notched the F200 main event on the hot Southern California day. For Burris, it was his only F200 win of the year and he bested Menifee’s Don Amigliore, who had been the hottest driver in the F200’s winning three of the previous four main events. 2015 F200 champion Troy McIntosh of Lake Elsinore was third in the main with previous race winner Steve Juillerat fourth and Riverside’s Justin Garcia, who was the subject of a story in the Riverside Press Enterprise the previous day, fifth.
McIntosh won the F200 title by 120-points over Banning’s Scott Gaynor, who was the best dressed karter on Halloween. Third, fourth and fifth in the points went to Juillerat, Garcia and Amigliore.
Burris and Amigliore won the heats and Burris was the “Hard Charger.”
Rob Marion got back on the winning track when he captured the season closing KT100 main event on the track carved out in the middle of the famous Riverside County half-mile clay oval. It was the first win for the Oxnard karter since he went on a mid-season tear and won three in a row from May 30th through July 4th. Tyler Wilson of Torrance, Danny West, Rev Parker of San Pedro and 2015 KT100 Troy Patton of Cherry Valley placed second through fifth.
Wilson won both of the KT100 heat races earlier in the day. Marion was the race “Hard Charger” moving from third to the top spot.
Patton won the KT100 championship by a mere 17-points over Marion. Parker, who won the first race of the season, Wilson and San Diego’s Randy Truax made up the remainder of the top five in points.
Wilson beat his second place finish in the KT100’s when he bested 2015 class champ Cody Nigh of Camarillo in the Opens. Dillon Hoffman and Norm Reynolds of San Marcos finished third and fourth. Reynolds won both of the heats. Wilson was the Open Class “Hard Charger.”
Nigh enjoyed the widest margin of any champion in 2015 when he bested Cherry Valley’s Steve Patton by 260-points for the champion’s crown. Reynolds, Chad Griggs of Lakeside and Chris Gibb of Long Beach rounded out the top five at year’s end.
Of course like all of the So Cal Oval Karter races this season, the Junior Junior class was on hand to take their laps. A.J. & Isabel Thornell of Temecula, Kevin Sherman, Jacey Voss & Troy McIntosh Jr. of Lake Elsinore and Trent Jackson all showed the stuff that future champions are made of.
Impressive number of people jumped into karts and took part in the SCOK “Arrive and Drive” program. Some are expressing interest in racing with SCOK on a regular basis in the 2016 season.
