What type of battery do I need for my starter

  I was battling this EXACT issue, but I have a BIG 155+cc motor, so I knew it would be a problem.
  
  The way I solved it was by hooking up batteries in parallel. I have a 230CCA battery in my Coleman starter, and a 670CCA battery connected in parallel to that.
  
  Now, WHY you are having that current capacity issue is a different question. My KPV started no problem with just 230CCA, FYI.

  Thanks. It is for our Yamaha kt100. By parallel do you mean two batteries? This thing is heavy enough, I can’t imagine having two batteries. :)

  You should have no issues starting it then.
  
  Is it an old battery? The older a battery is, the more it’s internal resistance increases and reduces it’s capacity to deliver current.
  
  Those batteries are not sitting under a hood being consistently charged by an alternator, so perhaps it is just a bit on the old side.

  Andre, Not too old. Bought it in December. It stays on a trickle charge. I’ve checked the battery water level and it is fine. Is there a different battery I should look at instead of this one? One with higher CCA or just a better one?

  Odd. Maybe the battery is bad and is just not providing the advertised CCA.
  
  Check the amps with a multimeter. Or try another one, doesn’t need to be larger.

  What was the amperage rating on your last battery? Maybe you’ve been purchasing batteries that were not powerful enough. Suggest charging your current battery with a charger that’s not a trickle charger. Borrow one from a friend if you don’t have one or ask you gas station.
  This might be a good time the consider purchasing a used Coleman mini-starter with a sealed battery. They’re about 18 pounds with the battery.
