  I’ve never been a fan of brake cleaner unless it’s to clean brakes. I use WD40 on everything metal, and ZEP orange from Home Depot for plastics and seat. If its caked on, anything you use will be a challenge. Good luck!

  I’d stay away from brake cleaner it can damage the paint. Any commercial de greaser like Krud Cutter or Purple stuff will work. For a solvent mineral spirts (paint thinner) works great leaves no residue and won’t hurt paint or plastics.

  Starting fluid (ether) does the same job as brake cleaner and doesn’t eat paint. Use that to knock all the crud and grease off, then finish off everything with WD40.

  I use Pledge for cleaning frame and plastics … Cheap and the results are amazing !

  I’m kinda in the same boat I just bought a kart and it looks like some minor surface rust on the axle and front hubs. Any suggestions to get that off?

  Wire brush or ScotchBrite scrubbing pads…plus elbow grease.

    This stuff is the best cleaner I have ever found…
    
    Xenit Cleaner and Remover from Stoner. Won’t hurt paint or plastic but it cuts through grease, oil, tape or sticker residue, you name it with ease. No water involved so you don’t have to worry about rust.

  find a dollar general and get some awsome. yellow cleaner is AMAZING!
  
  i used to use simple green but this awsome stuff is the stuff. spray kart down, set for 10 min and hose off. breaks down most of the nasty stuff. i follow up with cheap brake clean and another awsome bath after to nuetralize.
  
  then blow off with compresed air and coat with wd40….i head the pledge works well too but the wd40 keeps everything lubed up and makes it easier to clean the next time.
  
  been doing this process on everything from quads to karts for 30 years

  Best cleaner I’ve ever used is Greased Lightning (detergent/water mix) for anything that isnt super heavy greasy or grimy. It will make it look brand new, its unreal. Pledge and SC1 by Maxima Racing Oils are great products to shine and polish. Simple Green is a great all purpose cleaner.
