Three versions of karting wheels are in production from Foundation Wheel Development

The one thing that remains constant in the developmental years in karting is the size of the steering wheel; the most important link between driver and machine. Foundation Wheel Development has been established with the purpose of manufacturing steering wheels targeted at the youth racer with the intent of creating a more ergonomically and comfortable fit. FWD was created to bridge the gap that exists with full size steering wheel grip size for up and coming racers.

FWD steering wheel is purpose built to match the body size and kart size for Kid Kart and Cadet drivers. The wheels have a smaller grip circumference along with a slightly smaller overall height and width. In today’s karting, the steering wheel is approximately 13.5″ wide and has a 1.25″ diameter.

“Most Kid Karts and all Cadets come with a standard wheel found on full size karts,” stated Kyle Heckman of Foundation Wheel Development. “A five year old kid who has never driven anything before does not have the knowledge or experience to communicate that their wheel grip is too big and that they can’t grip well. They take what they’re given and learn how to adapt, because it’s what is available. Our mission with FWD is to provide younger karters the opportunity to have the same driver cockpit feel as they proportionately graduate into bigger karts. Having different wheel options that grow with one’s hand should allow young racers to adapt to new machines with the added comfort and confidence.”

Through data and track testing of different steering wheels, focuses on ergonomics, comfort and the proper feel is the goal of Foundation Wheel Development.  They strive to give racers the best opportunity when they hit the track. Grant and William Heckman have tested and competed with FWD with podium and victories earned in Cadet and Kid Kart competition for both 2-cycle and 4-cycle. With validation from other up and coming drivers such as Jaxson Reinholz and Yousef Adi, FWD is set to launch additional products that range from asphalt to dirt steering wheels.

“Through the years, everything is constantly changing for drivers,” added Heckman. “The size of your chassis, increased engine package, adjusting pedal location, growing out of your seat, outgrowing your helmet, gloves, shoes and suit. The one thing that has remained the same is the steering wheel, which is why we are looking to change this mold.  In an era where we are diagnosing data, and fighting for hundredths, not tenths, giving a young racer the ability to decrease fatigue and increase confidence is cheap insurance in the broad scheme of things. I was raised on the phrase that “ounces equal pounds” and although a newly designed steering wheel is nothing Earth-shattering, we are confident that our concept will provide assistance in helping reach the ultimate goal of winning.”

Foundation Wheel Development currently offers two styles of wheels that come in two different sizes.  The FWD Navigator wheel is a three-spoke flat top steering wheel and the FWD Pilot is a four spoke flat bottom steering wheel.  Each come available in two different sizes, the Rookie model (.81”/20.5mm diameter grip), meant for 5-8 year old kids, and the Pro model (1”/25.4mm diameter grip), for the  9-12 year old racer.  Both steering wheels from Foundation Wheel Development are currently for purchase. A third wheel is in development, which will be a three-spoke, dual flat steering wheel labeled the FWD Captain.
