March Madness not only was part of the college basketball scene but for karting as well with multiple major and regional events taking place coast to coast in the United States. Much of the focus was on the Musselman Honda Circuit as the Tucson, Arizona facility welcomed the RMC America’s Trophy opening event and the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour WinterNationals in back to back weekends. For Speed Concepts Racing driver Ashton Woon, it was a career-marking trip back to his native state as the Junior driver won four times in four different categories at the two events.

The trip began with the opening weekend of the inaugural RMC America’s Trophy championship that featured both Rotax Max Challenge and FZ Shifter categories. Woon competed in both the Junior MAX and FZ85 Junior divisions on the weekend. It marked the first weekend for Woon racing in a shifterkart after rising through the ranks in the single speed categories. Woon tied Brandon Ng for fast time in FZ85 Junior qualifying on Saturday, each posting a 50.988 lap time. Woon got the better race pace, as he went on to win both heat races on Saturday over Ng. The Prefinal saw Ng cross the line first, however, Woon was credited with the win after Brandon was penalized for jumping the start. The start of the 20 lap main event saw Ng come up and grab the lead over the opening circuit. Woon grabbed the top spot on lap two and was able to power away to a five-second advantage for the inaugural victory.

The double duty action in the first weekend in Tucson included racing in the two rounds of for the 32-driver Junior MAX field. Woon was fifth after qualifying for Saturday and advanced forward to lead only the final lap of the Prefinal to take the win. After battling with Colton Schniegenberg all race long, Woon held him and a charging Travis Pettit on the final lap to secure the inaugural race victory. Ashton picked up on Sunday where he left off, setting fast time in qualifying to edge out Schniegenberg by 95 thousandths. Woon slipped back one spot to second in the Prefinal and would retain that position through the 20-lap Final, locking up three trophies over the three main events on the weekend.

Weekend Two featured the opening rounds of the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour with the Musselman Honda Circuit hosting the SKUSA WinterNationals for the first time. Woon continued double duty action with X30 Junior and KA100 Junior. The only race that did not result in a trophy was in the Saturday action for KA100 Junior. A bad timed qualifying session put Woon back in 16th for the grid of the Prefinal. The start put Woon back to 21st during the opening lap but managed to work back up to 11th. From there, Woon made his way up to fourth, just one spot off the podium.

Woon was able to find better track space in X30 Junior qualifying on Saturday, ending up third in the session only 56 thousandths off fast time. He held the position through the Prefinal and allowed him to move up to second at the start of the Final. Woon drove second all 22 laps and was promoted to the win after a penalty for provisional winner Travis Pettit.

Sunday action began stronger for Woon in the KA100 Junior category, coming out of the qualifying session in third. After a hard fought battle in the Prefinal, Woon improved one spot to second to start the Final from the front row. Running back in fourth for much of the Final, Woon put himself into third and was able to make a great outside move around the front two, taking over the lead on lap 20. He held on through the final two laps to secure his first SKUSA Pro Tour victory in the category.

The action in X30 Junior on Sunday began for Woon where it ended on Saturday with him at the top of the time sheets. Woon edged out Nico Kotowski for fast time in the session by 77 thousandths. The Prefinal, however, was a battle with Pettit with Woon ending up second after 10 laps. The start of the Final saw Woon slip back to fourth early and battled for the third position all the way to the checkered flag, securing a third podium finish in four main events on the weekend.

In total, Woon was able to record seven top four results over seven main events over the two weekends, competing in four different categories. Ashton leads both the FZ85 Junior and Junior MAX championships for the RMC America’s Trophy while leading KA100 Junior but sitting second in the X30 Junior standings for the SKUSA Pro Tour. Both programs head to the Motorsports Country Club of Cincinnati in Batavia, Ohio this June.
