Experience is defined as ‘the knowledge, skill or practical wisdom gained through direct observation, participation or living through events. In motorsports, including karting, experience helps pave the way to success. Speed Concepts Racing has amassed more than two centuries of knowledge in the sport through its ownership and those working under the tent with their driver, all in an in effort to reach the podium steps each and every weekend.

Mike and Alex Speed bring their own experiences within the sport, both as drivers and now as team owners since 2016. Mike was an accomplished driver during his time behind the wheel and Alex became known as one of the most decorated shifterkart drivers from 2000 to 2010. When Alex’s time behind the wheel eventually came to an end, he and his father both moved to Florida to be part of the growing Ocala Gran Prix operation. Eventually, they branched out and, by the end of 2016, Speed Concepts Racing was established. Over the last 10 seasons, SCR has brought in stalwart names from within the sport to help guide the younger generation of drivers. Many of these key individuals came through their own tenures at the now-closed Ocala Gran Prix program.

“Through all of our karting experiences, I can say with confidence we have seen it all,” stated Mike Speed of Speed Concepts Racing. “The evolution of the sport over the past four decades has seen many changes. What remains the core aspect in the sport of karting is having a driver perform his best. Through testing and experimenting, we can find the right set up for the certain track and conditions, but the end result still sits with the driver. That’s what we focus on here at Speed Concepts Racing is developing drivers and the crew we have working with our team know how to get the job done.”

One of the most diverse figures under the Speed Concepts Racing tent is Richie Warren. The Ohio native has over 45 years of karting experience both as a driver and in the manufacturing side of the sport. Warren is a chassis manufacturer for the enduro laydown karts – Richie Warren Chassis (RWC) – which is among the most winning karts in road racing today. Warren has been part of SCR since it launched, having worked with many different drivers over that tenure.

Chris Enderlein is another staff member who can be considered a karting ‘lifer’. The Minnesota native was born into karting with his father Mark, the owner of River Lake Racing, which served the karting community for over 30 years. Chris, a former winner at the Rock Island Grand Prix, has years of experience behind the wheel and transitioned from the seat into become a leading mechanic and driver coach. Both he and Warren were among those who connected with the Speed family during the OGP days.

“SCR has all the expertise necessary to win championships,” added Carlos Calderon, driver and karting parent racing with Speed Concepts Racing. “Their expertise starts with an analytical approach to both driver development as well as data acquisition. Leveraging their highly decorated coaches Alex Speed and Austin Garrison, they spend significant effort into improving their drivers’ techniques after every session. They spend time offline analyzing data to ensure that both the engines and chassis are operating at their optimal level. Their adjustments to the chassis setup rely on decades of experience without falling victim to using a rote approach, allowing for novel discoveries based on track evolution. This is paired with an excellent attention to detail amongst all the mechanics under the tent,. And all of this effort is combined with SpeedLab’s first class, in-house engine program led by Mario Ioffredo.”

One of the meticulous minds on the team is that of Tom Buckley. A former karter himself, Buckley provides an analytical look at the sport. He was a notable figure in the Northeast during the late 1990s and early 2000s, working with SSC East outfit. After some time away from the sport, he was brought back, working with Brian Jacobsen’s Profile Racing and eventually Franklin Motorsports – working with now-NASCAR driver Sam Mayer. Over the last few seasons, Buckley has found a new home with SCR working with multiple drivers at all different age groups.

One of the newer faces to Speed Concepts Racing is Aaron Bromberek. The Illinois native began karting in 2011 and worked his way up from the local level to regional and national championship programs. Bromberek transitioned from the driver’s seat into the role of mechanic and driver coach, working with Jackson Wolny. That is where his connection with SCR began, and the pair reached the top step of the podium multiple times during their tenure. Wolny has moved on to focus on car racing with Bromberek now a permanent fixture under the SCR tent.

On and off the track, Austin Garrison has helped to continue the winning success for Speed Concepts Racing. The 2024 United States Pro Kart Series champion and 2025 Superkarts! USA Pro Tour champion has a resume that dates well into the early 2010s, including his Cadet and Junior years at Ocala Gran Prix. The Garrison / SCR combination continues to build going into the 2026 season.

One of the key assets under the Speed Concepts Racing banner is their in-house engine program – SpeedLab Racing Engines. Led by Mario Ioffredo, SpeedLab provides engines for drivers under the tent as well as customers throughout the paddock, including the IAME, ROK and Rotax brands. Mario is part of the SCR family that came over from the OGP days and has become an integral player in the everyday operation of Speed Concepts Racing.

“Our dynamic is like a school of professors with real world experience,” said Alex Speed of Speed Concepts Racing. “Myself and my dad, along with those working under the tent have gone through the different roles and experiences and provide the perfect guide for those new to the sport or drivers seeking to develop themselves to the next step.”

Speed Concepts Racing is known since it began in late 2016 as bringing together the best minds to help take their drivers to the top. The results over the last 10 years have shown that, including helping to guide those taking the next step into car racing. Experience is the key and that’s what you have at Speed Concepts Racing.
