One of the hottest areas of strength and growth in American karting right now is in Texas and surrounding states like Louisiana. 19-year-old University of Louisiana at Lafayette Business Administration student Camryn Reed is right in the middle of this expansion with Reed MotorSports, the race team that her and her father Josh launched at the beginning of the 2025 season. What began with four drivers at the start of last year’s Texas Sprint Racing Series grew to 18 by the end of the season. Over the course of the season, Reed MotorSports had become a leading CRG race team and dealer supporting not only the Texas Sprint Racing Series and CKNA South events, but also their local kart track at Moore Park Raceway in Lafayette, Louisiana. Back in November, Reed scored some crucial investment to fuel the growth of their operation after winning a business pitch competition offered by her school.

The ’Inn-eaux-vate 2025 Entrepreneurship Pitch Competition’ saw students from more than 30 majors compete and the contest began with a total of 82 applicants. ‘Inn-eaux-vate’ is the University of Lafayette B.I. Moody III College of Business Administration‘s annual student pitch competition that challenges participants to develop innovative business ideas, work with mentors and present rapid-fire pitches for a chance at seed funding. Competitors were required to make a three-minute pitch video. The school whittled down the initial 82 submissions to 18 semi-finalists. Those finalists then made a three-minute pitch, which they performed in front of the judges to make it to the final six, and then again to ultimately win $10,000. Reed’s pitch for Reed Motorsports wowed the judges and she came away with the victory!

“With the $10,000, I plan to invest in another tent, as our program is growing so quickly,” Reed told EKN. “This program isn’t just me; my father, Josh Reed, is the man behind it all. Coming from a non-racing background, my father made numerous sacrifices to learn everything he could to help me succeed, and that’s exactly what he did. Now we want to give back to the sport that has given me so much and pass on our knowledge and love for the sport to the next generation. Reed MotorSports is the affordable option for a driver development program, where we focus on building the skills of the driver for success.”

In 2026, Reed MotorSports plans to attend all of the TSRS, CKNA South, and CKNA National events. They’ll also continue to support their local club racing as well as select greater Houston club races. Reed MotorSports was actually formed as their family team over 10 years ago in 2015 when Camryn started karting with her father. It was just Josh and Camryn, learning the sport together. She started at Moore Park in the 206 Cadet class and progressed through the categories, racing in WKA, CKNA, and SKUSA events as she worked with teams like Jay Howard Driver Development, KartWerks USA, Positive Motorsports, Team Felon, and eventually Iron Rock Motorsports as she moved from four-cycle through to two-cycle advancing up from Micro to Mini to Junior. At age 15, fueled by dreams of becoming a race car driver, Camryn moved into SCCA Spec Miata racing and eventually F1600 with Iron Rock Motorsports. In 2022, she won the SCCA Super Tour National Championship in the Formula 1600 category, becoming the youngest to do so, and the only female to win as well. She was also invited to the Mazda Scholarship Shootout in both 2024 and 2025, taking significant experience and education from both opportunities.

In 2024, Camryn focused her efforts back on karting and she elected to double-down on her love for the sport by officially rolling out Reed MotorSports as a CRG dealer and trackside support team at the start of 2025. The interest in her program expanded quickly, growing to as many as 18 drivers in regional competition. A unique and extremely admirable component of her approach is that while she charges for the team’s services on the regional and national level, at her home club, RMS supports new racers free of charge to provide valuable education and assistance. The 2026 season promises to be even better than this past year.

Outside of karting, Camryn and her father are also currently working on their ‘Rescue to Racer’ build on YouTube and Instagram, where they are documenting the complete process of taking a non-running 2006 Mazda Miata and building it into a Spec MX5 race car. Camryn will pilot the car at select events at the end of 2026 and, in 2027, the car will become the foundation for their Reed MotorSports Karts-to-Cars program. Camryn has been part of the Mazda MX-5 Cup Shootout for two years in a row, and through this opportunity, she’s seen firsthand the lack of seat time that the karting competitors have at the Shootout. Reed MotorSports’ goal is to be an affordable option for kart racers to get to the next level, learning the basics, getting their SCCA license, and even competing in SCCA events.
