Musgrave moves to lead ahead of Morgatto and Wick

There was not much racing over the last month in terms of shifterkarts to really affect the standings for the eKartingNews.com Shifterkart Driver Rankings presented by Stilo USA. Only two races qualified to be included in the sliding 12-month ranking system since the last edition released on June 2. The biggest impact to the standings was the loss of the 2024 SKUSA Pro Tour SpringNationals, which were held in June 2024. Those results now removed from the driver’s scores have now put Factory Kart driver Billy Musgrave into the #1 position.

The score for Musgrave (Factory Karts) remains unchanged from June, with a DNF at the 2024 SKUSA SpringNationals not counted toward his best seven results over the last 12 months. Staying static and holding onto the 2024 SKUSA SummerNationals triumph as his finish, Musgrave takes over the top spot with former #1 Matheus Morgatto (PSL Karting / Birelart) losing his last SKUSA Pro Tour win. The 2024 SpringNationals winner has only earned two wins since, one at the SKUSA Winter Series, and the other at Stars Championship Series. The Brazilian now trails Musgrave by 16 points. Holding third but also losing points is Kyle Wick (GFC Karting). The former SKUSA Pro Tour champion was third at the 2024 SKUSA SpringNationals, losing that point total and replacing it with a result from last year at the ProKart Challenge, still within 150 points of the top spot.

Holding in the top-five are AJ Myers (Magik Kart USA) and Michael Avansino (Ron White Racing / CRG). Myers, a three-time SKUSA Pro Tour champion – is fourth in the SKUSA Pro Tour championship standings, only 71 points out of the top spot with results of seventh and sixth. Myers was in contention in last year’s title chase until contact with Morgatto at the start of the Final put him on the sidelines. While Myers lost points from last year’s SpringNationals, Avansino point total stayed the same. The California driver ended his title defense at Challenge of the Americas with six wins in 2025. While showing speed at the two SKUSA Pro Tour events, it has not equated into top-10 results thus far.

Up three spots to sixth is current SKUSA Pro Tour championship leader Jay Urwin (PSL Karting / Birelart). Fourth and second over the two events has him at the top of the title chase with New Castle remaining where he finished seventh one year ago. The Kiwi improved his score with a third-place result at the Stars Championship Series event at New Castle. He jumped ahead of Gavin Bayliff (TKG Birelart USA) and Justin White (Maranello USA). Bayliff – the 2025 SKUSA WinterNationals winner – improved his score slightly with fourth at the Stars New Castle weekend but remains in seventh. His DNF at the SpringNationals kept points away from him toward the EKN Driver Rankings had has him sixth in the championship, back by 149 points. White is enjoying his best season of his career coming off the SKUSA Winter Series win in February and sitting ninth in the SKUSA Pro Tour championship.

Down three spots to ninth is Jacob Gulick (GFC Karting). The Pacific Northwest driver was seventh at last year’s SpringNationals, losing those points and not having a strong top-five result thus far with a P7 at this year’s SpringNationals. Third place at ROK Vegas in 2024 is his best score over the last 12 months. Holding 10th is veteran Hunter Pickett (GFC Karting). The Californian has two DNF results in 2025 SKUSA Pro Tour and holds a best score of sixth from 2024 ROK Vegas. Pickett also lost points from the 2024 SKUSA SpringNationals falling off the 12-month slide.

No change in the score for Factory Karts Billy Musgrave. The 2024 SKUSA SummerNationals winner is riding that result, and that of the SuperNationals and this year’s WinterNationals. Musgrave has earned EKN Driver of the Year twice before – 2013 and 2015, however, the one title that eludes him is a SKUSA Pro Tour championship. He enters the 2025 SummerNationals 19 points out of the lead, heading into the event as the defending race winner.

Brazil

After an amazing 2024 season, the pack has caught up to Morgatto. The Brazilian has seen the checkered flag twice, however, neither were at the SKUSA Pro Tour where points are higher. The defending SKUSA Pro Tour champion still has a shot at this year’s crown, trailing by 72 points. Adding Urwin and Bayliff, three Birelart drivers are in the hunt for the title. The difference between this year and last year, Morgatto is not competing in the FIA Karting European Championship but driver endurance cars in Brazil.

The 2019 SKUSA Pro Tour champion continues to be among the top levels in shifterkart drivers here in the USA. His limited schedule, however, of only four events in 2025 has resulted in two wins. Those two wins at ProKart Challenge back in March will need to be part of his total with no other races outside the SKUSA Pro Tour. This could drop he GFC Karting driver from the top-three depending on his result at the SummerNationals, hoping to build off the podium result in Ohio this past May.

EKN Driver Rankings Calculation Process
The EKN Driver Rankings are calculated using a driver’s best finishes in major North American races. Assembled using events from the previous 12 months from the current date, we use a driver’s best seven finishes in the TaG and Shifterkart categories to determine their overall current point total. With each new release, results posted from more than one year ago are discarded. To deliver our ranking list, we tabulate the results of all the national programs and selected regional programs. We have also included the results for the major one-off events such as the SKUSA SuperNationals, the Rock Island Grand Prix, and other special races.

Each race is initially weighted based on the prestige and history of the event or series with a score of ten (10) being the highest attainable base ranking. For 2024, the SKUSA SuperNationals will receive a score of 10 in its initial weighting in the TaG and Shifterkart categories. A base ranking of 9.5 is awarded to special events of ROK Vegas, US Trophy Final, Rock Island Grand Prix, and IAME Grand National Championship. The core of the schedule featuring SKUSA Pro Tour, SKUSA Winter Series, United States Pro Kart Series, Florida Winter Tour, and Challenge of the Americas begin with a base ranking of 9. Other programs such as ProKart Challenge, Stars Championship Series, ROK Sonoma and others given a base ranking of either 8.5 or 8.0.

The EKN staff reserves the right to adjust the rankings of each event throughout the year. A minimum entry total for any event to be considered for the Driver Rankings program is five (5). If an event does not have at least five (5) drivers starting the race, those results will not be tabulated toward the Driver Rankings.

Added to these initial rankings are two variables that help confirm the true importance of an event to the ranking process – field size and field strength. A percentage of one weighting point is added for the size of the field, while the number of existing top-50 drivers entered offers another full point or fraction of a point. The sum of these numbers becomes the overall ranking for any race.

Following a race, drivers receive points based on their finishing positions with 100 points earned for a win. Each subsequent position drops by one point with 99 points given to the second-place driver and so on throughout the field. These points are then multiplied by the overall ranking to produce a driver’s final point total from each event. Using a driver’s best seven races, we calculate each driver’s overall score and subsequent ranking.
