In a continued effort to highlight the many outstanding performances by drivers around the country, eKartingNews.com is proud to introduce the ‘Driver of the Month’ program. Each month, the staff at EKN will determine the one driver who stood out above the rest and give the viewers a chance to know exactly what they accomplished and who they are.

History is a big part of what the Superkarts! USA SuperNationals means. Since 1997, the Las Vegas event has welcomed thousands of karters from around the world, all vying for a chance to put their name on the winner’s list. Colombian Sebastian Garzon nearly etched his name into the record books last year, celebrating a provisional victory on the podium of SuperNationals 26. With the overturn of a penalty, Garzon was demoted back to second spot. This year, Sebastian made it clear he was a winner, taking the checkered flag first in both Junior main events on SuperSunday at SuperNationals 27 for his first two career victories.

Garzon came into the SuperNationals as the reigning SKUSA Winter Series KA100 Junior champion and missed out on the USPKS class championship by only 24 points. The Orsolon Racing / Tony Kart driver opened up SuperNats 27 with the fifth quickest lap in qualifying, turning that into two heat race wins and a sixth-place finish against the 84-driver field. Those results put him on the outside of the front row, alongside last year’s double Junior winner Turner Brown.

The start of the 20-lap Final for KA100 Junior saw Garzon leading the majority of the first half before he was shuffled outside the top five. Still with the lead group, Garzon bought his time inching forward to be ready to strike when the time was right. He got himself up into the third spot behind Ty Fisher and Ukrainian Lev Krutoholov. As they took the white flag, Garzon was able to put himself into the second spot through the first half of the final lap. Entering turn 13, Fisher did not defend and Sebastian dove to the inside. He came out with the lead and held it through the final few corners, reaching the line first to claim his first SuperNationals triumph.

2024 was the debut at the SuperNationals in the X30 Junior division for Garzon. He had raced the category at a handful of events; however, his focus was around the KA program. Sebastian came out of a unique qualifying session with the 13th quickest time in the field of 46 drivers. Garzon showed his speed in the heat races, posting the fast lap of the race in the opening moto to finish fifth. He duplicated that result in the other two heats to end up fourth on the main event grid.

Garzon put himself into fifth over the opening circuits of the 20-lap Final. Lap six, he was pushed back to eighth but eventually worked his way back up to fifth, leading the second group behind the leaders. Shuffling by the lead group allowed Garzon and the second pack to close in and make it a cluster of drivers fighting for position as they took the white flag. Through turn one, Garzon was able to get inside both Turner Brown and Alexander Vanchev to put himself third. As Ty Fisher and Diego Ardiles slammed against each other through turn three and turn four, Garzon slipped under both on the exit, going into turn five with the lead. That was the winning move as Garzon went unchallenged to the checkered flag, scoring his second victory of the day.

The two wins on SuperSunday at the SKUSA SuperNationals 27 puts Garzon on a list that includes only four Junior drivers – Connor De Phillippi (2005), Jeremy Fletcher (2021), and Turner Brown (2023) – as two-time winners in the same SuperNationals. Later in the day, Joe Turney joined that list, winning KA100 Senior and Pro X30 as well.

The 2025 season will be one of transition for Garzon. He will advance into the KA100 Senior category on the karting side of his schedule, while also making the move to the USF2000 Championship thanks to his Lucas Oil School of Racing title in 2024.

How did you get started in karting? When I was 4, a friend of my dad invited me to practice in a race track near to Neiva, and since then I started my passion for karting.
What has been the high point in your racing career?  2024 has been my best year, I won the SKUSA Winter Series in KA100 Junior, second place in the USPKS championship and I am currently the SuperNationals champion in the X30 Junior and KA 100 Junior categories.
What are your goals in racing? My sporting goals are twofold, to reach Formula 1 or IndyCar.
In a few words, how would you describe your driving style? Cautious, smooth and aggressive.
Funniest moment at the race track? Being on the track driving, sharing with my team because they are my family and talking with my friends.

The Real Deal

What do you do when not at the track? I go to school, I train my physical condition, also my mental-cognitive state and I try to spend time with my family.
What are your goals outside of karting? To have a family, and to raise my children.
What app or game do you play right now? Formula 1, Brawl stars and rocket league.
What type of street car would you like to drive? All Mercedes sports cars.
What are your pet peeves or things that irritate you? When I do badly in a race, when I lose a quiz and sometimes when I lose games.
What do you think could be done to improve the sport of karting? That we all have the same equality when leaving the track so that all pilots who cannot drive have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams, basing my answer logically on the fact that it should be cheaper in terms of price.
What are your favorite aspects about the sport of karting? The adrenaline, passing many karts and winning races to keep fulfilling my dream.
