One of the more historic events in the sport of karting is the Quincy Grand Prix. Situated in Quincy, Illinois within the city’s ‘South Park’, the kart race became an annual fixture for the sport, and for the region, running from 1970 until 2001 before original promote Gus Traeder put it on the shelf. It was in 2018 that his son Terry Traeder reignited the event. It ran for two years before the COVID-19 pandemic shut it down in 2020. The popular event came back for two additional years until Traeder elected to not promote the event in 2023.

Many karters were at a loss last season when the announcement was made that the Quincy Grand Prix would not return. Among them included Jeff Scott – a former race winner and local business owner in the Quincy area.

Since then, Scott has been working behind the scenes on revitalizing the Quincy Grand Prix for 2024, and he has confirmed that the event will return on June 8-9 thanks in part to a grant of $30,000 from the Bring Entertainment to Quincy (BET on Q) Committee awarded to Scott and WinOne LLC.

Promotion is nothing new to the Scott family. Jeff’s grandfather Albert built the Quincy Raceways facility – which is now Adam’s County IL Speedway. The Scott family, including Jeff’s father Bob, helped to run the facility for 30 years.

“We believe that the Quincy Grand Prix is more than just a karting event. It is a place where families can come spend the day and make some memories,” Scott stated in the Muddy River News article. “We are committed to making this year’s event the best one yet and look forward to welcoming participants and spectators from near and far.”

In addition to the karting action, their plan is to bring more activities to the weekend festival, including bounce houses for kids, a cornhole tournament, and a band on Saturday night. Other events being considered are a motorcycle rally and an adult power wheels race.

“This event has a long history of bringing together racing enthusiasts from across the region. We are excited to once again showcase our community and provide a platform for talented drivers to compete.”

When contacted by EKN, Scott stated that he encourages all of the racers who missed out on the previous Quincy Grand Prix events to not miss the 2024 edition, as it could be “their only shot”.

Margay Racing has already confirmed the event as an Ignite Major race for the 2024 season, including Ignite Senior, Masters, Heavy, and Legends.
