Flashback Friday: Superkarts! USA Pro Tour SummerNationals – Modesto Grand Prix
10 years since the lone street race in the 15 year history of series
The Superkarts! USA Pro Tour wrapped up its 15th season last weekend with the running of the SummerNationals at the New Castle Motorsports Park. It has been a historic run for the organization and the championship program that has competed across the country – west coast to east coast.
Over the course of the 15 seasons for the SKUSA Pro Tour, there has been only one true street race that counted as a championship event.
The 2014 SKUSA Pro Tour SummerNationals was contested at the Modesto Grand Prix. The northern California city welcomed SKUSA and karters from all over the country and spots from around the world to compete over three days on the city streets. It was a grueling three days for competitors, teams and the SKUSA staff who put on the show, which featured night racing.
While the overall feeling of the event was a negative, it certainly opened up the ideas of possibility for different street races. SKUSA was able to conduct the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix with success, bringing in many local business and tons of support from the area until the city elected not to continue the event following 2020. Today, the Rock Island Grand Prix continues as the longest running street race in the USA, nearing the 29th edition this Labor Day weekend. This weekend, the Elkhart Riverwalk Grand Prix brings community activities and combines them with a kart race over two nights.
Notable names did find success at the Modesto Grand Prix and turn it into SKUSA Pro Tour championships later that season. British driver Jordon Lennox-Lamb doubled up in the headline S1 division. Current IndyCar driver David Malukas highlighted his lone SKUSA Pro Tour TaG Junior championship with a double win weekend in Modesto. Current USPKS X30 Pro championship leader Austin Garrison won both main events in the S2 Semi-Pro division, going on to win the series title.
