Busy Weekend of Road Racing Across the Country

This past weekend was a busy one for Road Racing, which showed three great gatherings. Road Racing is a unique and fast form of karting, which as been part of the sport since its inception. The quest for speed took karters from the temporary parking lot circuits to real race tracks, and quickly became a mainstay during the 1960s and 1970s. You would typically see the best sprint track drivers at the Road Race nationals throughout the year. Today, Road Racing is a more relaxed racing trip, with some events only competing on one day. It still features some of the best racers in the country, aboard a wide variety of karts that include shifterkarts, TaG, sprint 2-Cycle, sprint 4-Cycle, and of course laydown karts.
The Puget Sound Road Race Association held its first event of the season at The Ridge Motorsports Park in Shelton, Washington. The 2.47-mile course features 16 turns and has over 300 feet of elevation change per lap – including a corkscrew-like 50 foot plunge down the ‘Ridge Complex’. The event featured a number of shifterkart drivers from all different parts of the Pacific Northwest. Find out more about their future events at psrra.org and view photos here.
Down the coast, the Northern California Karters held a one-day event at the Thunderhill Raceway Park, north of Sacramento. Karters took on the new ‘west course’ at the Willows, California facility, which sits alongside the older circuit that has hosted a number of former IKF events and Road Race Grand Nationals. Midwest road racing continues thanks to the Championship Enduro Series. Their season opener took place at the Blackhawk Farms Raceway in South Beloit, Illinois – right on the border to Wisconsin just north of Rockford. This weekend featured a number of regular road racers, along with many of the great sprint track karters from the area. The event featured a stop by ‘Adventure Aaron’ of MAVTV fame, filming some footage for an upcoming episode, along with the Animal Nationals presented by 4-Cycle Central.
