Many of us are running belt drives on clones (in the road racing series).
TS Racing has the front drivers and basket that will fit just about any disc clutch out there (Jammer, Bully, Horstman, etc). Several kart shops carry the rear belt drive gears. However, the gears only come in 1 piece gears now, but we all just cut them with a hacksaw or bandsaw into 2 pieces and they work nicely.
Your belt length will depend on your kart. _________________ Jamie Webb

Hmm, ??... clutches that cost more than the motor !
Seems to defeat the concept of clone racing ! _________________ Chad

You don't have to run that style clutch. There are several people running Max-Torque or Noram clutches and do just fine with them.
But most people that are already running the road racing series ALREADY have these clutches so I just showed him an easy way to convert it over. Do it how you want, doesn't matter to me. I have seen all styles of clutches running up front. As long as you show up to race, doesn't matter to me. _________________ Jamie Webb

Hello Jamie, where do you get 35 chain 25 tooth clutch drum for Noram GE clutch? I know about MaxTorque, but already have GE clutch I would like to use. Thanks |

I am still surprised that a rule set for racing $200 motors would allow $300 clutches to be used !
..you know the way it goes, someone wins a couple of races using a Bully, and then everyone thinks they need to buy the same to win
Like i said..it defeats the concept of budget clone racing. .. cost control ? _________________ Chad

The problem with your argument is though, the "cheap" clutches work just as good on the clone engine. We have seen it over SEVERAL years of racing the clone now. You can put the belt drive gears on a Max-Torque or Noram clutch and be just as fast as the Bully clutch. Your theory has been debunked by facts. _________________ Jamie Webb

Well, maybe if you had mentioned a "cheap" drum clutch in your original reply (instead of the $300 disc clutches that you implied)... then maybe you wouldnt have to get so defensive about my comments ! _________________ Chad

PM me with the sizes you need in 2 piece, and I'll see what I have. |

First there were rocks, carried down the hill. Then someone saw a round rock roll down the hill so everyone had to have round rocks to roll down the hill. Then someone saw a big bush roll down the hill so everyone had to put two bushes together to roll rocks down the hill. Then someone noticed that trees were round so everyone had to cut down trees to roll rocks down the hill. Then someone discovered rubber in a circle so everybody had to have rubber to roll rocks down the hill. Then someone put the rubber one a round metal surface so everyone had to have metal circles to roll rocks down the hill. Then someone found fuel and the motor so everyone had to have fuel and the motor to roll rocks down the hill. In the end, there were no more rocks on the hill _________________ swampwater smyth concurs "If you aint first, yer last."

Those $300 clutches he mentioned can be found for $100 used these days. There are plenty of people getting out of the sport that raced the briggs flathead with parts for sale. He never said there were not other options, just that he knows of an option at TS racing, a trusted parts source for roadracer's.
There is even a good disc clutch for sale now that only runs $150 anyway, no need to spend $300 anymore. But you probably knew that already right?
Chad, do you even race a clone? |

No Tracy, i dont ...but does that prevent me from having an opinion ?
( but i do run a OHV Briggs with a drum clutch ! )
Clone racing is (was ?) all about reducing costs to allow more people to get on the track. Allowing clutches that cost more than the engine does not fit my idea of budget racing.
What else do those ex Briggs racers have lying around ?..$1000 Tilly carbs ?, .. hey maybe that stroker crank will fit ??, ..what else ?
..get the picture ?
Just because something is readily available or even cheap, does not mean it should be allowed in a "spec" class.
It has been predicted before, as soon as "racers" start to get involved in a "budget" class.... its only a matter of time before it becomes too expensive for the majority. _________________ Chad

Who said the clone class was a "spec" class? It's no more spec than the flat head or Animal road racing classes are. It's just another class and it IS a lot cheaper to run than Animal regardless of what clutch you have on there. Because of the low HP you also don't need the top of the line kart or new tires like you do on the Animal either.
The $300 clutch (I don't know of anyone that has paid $300 for a clutch) does NOT perform better than the Max-Torque clutch so I fail to see your point. It has been PROVEN on track, not in theory, so again, I fail to see your point. And obviously at a few tracks this is the BIGGEST class and/or fastest growing class so the "spec formula" if there is one, is working good. _________________ Jamie Webb

| I think a lot of clone racers were flathead racers at some point and had those so called $300 dollar clutches on the shelf already paid for. Now if I go ahead and use what I already have, that is cheaper than having to buy a new one even if it is only $60 bucks. I think they are allowing the disk clutches since there is no advantage with low HP engines AND some people had them already. Why not use what you have in the garage in a "budget" class. |
