I have been full time in karting for over 20 years. For the 15 years prior to that, I was building and selling kart race engine on a part time basis. So, I have had quite a lot of experience with this price game. To be honest, Karters do NOT want a cheaper engine or a less expensive anything. Just within my karting business, I have had it proven to me many times. I will never again play the price game with anyone.
Latest example. We studied the dirt oval and asphalt oval market for some time. We wanted to build a tire that would work as well or better than any other available tire. After a ton of testing and monetary investment, we built over 1000 sets of tires. Having had that many built, we could offer them at a very much reduced price. We put enough rubber on them so that a stock clone racers, asphalt or dirt, could run one set of $95 tires for at least two full seasons before needing another tire. If the other racers wanted to cut them and chemically prep them, they could easily do so and still spend considerably less money on their tire program for the season.
Long story short, we can't give these things away. So, we raised the price up to be on the same par with other tire suppliers and sales have increased. Seems the racers put more stock into "Perception" than Fact.
I truly believe that most kart racers WANT to spend more money on tires, chassis, engines, clutches, etc. Then, they want to complain about parking fees and pit pass prices.
If you can get a good handle on the mentality of this deal, PLEASE clue me in.
thanks,
Mike Confused
