I was nearly crushed by a runaway Toyota today while at the auto parts store. It came crashing through the storefront and chased me to the back of the aisle while the shelving closed in behind me. I still have glass in my hair and shoes. It was right out of a movie. The adrenaline flowed like it never has before. Now I know how those dudes feel who get chased by a friggin bear. Ate a big ass steak and hugged my kid and I am very happy to still have my legs. News said throttle stuck and the driver was not cited.

Toyotas are made in USA, in non-union shops

The throttle modules/motors are made in china and said by some investigators are prone to fault by interference. In other words not a well isolated signal. For what's it worth.

Brake pedal is the one on the LEFT.

Back in the '80's, I had a Pontiac that would occasionally cut out at high speed. No motor = no steering and no brakes !!!
(parking brake is interesting at 70mph!)
That was a scary situation and the dealer service tech mentioned that i was not the only one who had experienced that problem !
Most drivers will have experienced a stuck throttle at some time, and should know how to react when it happens. They cannot just pass all responsibility on to the manufacturer.

+1 on both.

I once owned a VW Golf diesel that would occasionally do a high-rev "run-away". After a good VW technician found the pump issue, problem solved, and VW picked up the tab. Up until then, this technician owner used the fix that is commonly known as the binders. Pressing hard on the binders will stall an engine. Guess some people just don’t remember what stops what from going forward.

On a side note: A trooper buddy of mine tells me the new (Toyota owners) scam attempt of getting out of a speeding ticket is to say the throttle is stuck, and they just keep driving faster… until, all of a sudden, the throttle isn’t stuck anymore. Aesop’s fable and karma still gets you a speeding ticket when you’re driving a car that’s not in the recall category. And in some cases, it gets you a speeding ticket, cited for reckless driving, then cuffed and stuffed.

And unless something has changed in the last few years … locally here in town within the city limits, 15mph over any posted city street speed limit gets you, among other things, cuffed and stuffed and a trip to the pokey. And not the Gumby and Pokey kind either. Now then, 14mph over the posted city street speed limit gets you … a 5 squad car block in, drawn down on, a really expensive speeding ticket, a really expensive reckless driving ticket, and a few Saturdays in defensive driving school. Just no trip to the pokey. Just say’n, not that I’d know first hand or anything like that, you know. Shocked

Markus

What was the age of the driver? I've seen a several studies indicating that nearly all the Toyota 'runaways' have been either very young or very old drivers - with precious few between 20 and 60 years old. The most famous 'out liar' (runaway Prius in California) has been identified as an obvious fraud.
Mechanical/electrical failures would be expected to be random with respect to the drivers age and experience. Driver error tends to focus on inexperience or slow/senile Rolling Eyes

20 some years ago, the Audi 5000 throttle 'runaway' issue showed the very same pattern of very young and very old drivers. It was eventually attributed to driver error with no fault of the car, but not before it nearly put Audi out of business Evil or Very Mad

Allegations of criminal behavior against Toyota are at best suspect, given that they have come from the majority owners of prime competitor General Motors (otherwise known as the US Government). Rolling Eyes

PS Glad you're OK.

Tim

Here in Cali, you can rob an old lady, do a drive bye shooting, molest a 5 year old kid, get arrested and be out in a couple days to do it all over again. We are letting people out of jail left and right because the state has no money. Criminals know it, our (fresno/visalia) murder rate has doubled from last year.

Well, its not like there's anything else to do around there.
