hey, anyone named Dan would be most popular
you are right though. if his last name weren't Earnhardt he probably would've never won most popular driver, certainly not 8 years in a row. _________________ Blaise Haynes

I think Carl Long was a victim of the popularity of NASCAR. Fans had been complaining about the inconsistencies with which penalties were dealt. The same infraction by two different drivers in 2 different races would get different penalties. Many complained that it was favoritism. NASCAR stated that they would be more consistent when handing out penalties and Carl's deal fell right into that as far as timeline goes. NASCAR had recently made their stand and we were seeing some consistency. Fines were being ramped up in each instance. I think the penalty before Carl was in the $150,000 range so in that sense NASCAR stayed consistent. I just think that being an underfunded team that rarely ever finished a race and often borrowed equipment just to make it to the track, they should have been dealt with a little differently. Having an illegal motor isn't right for anyone, but like I said, it wasn't their motor, they never opened it up, they weren't a threat to any of the regulars, and they had no means of paying the penalty. _________________ Blaise Haynes

Let there be no excuses, what Nascar did to Carl Long was flat wrong. It wasn't consistent, it was a 200,000 dollar penalty when a previous high was 150 and since has been 150. If anyone watched the Bill France Jr. special on speed, he would have never let that happen. Richard Chidress didnt have any money or an engine so Bill Jr went down to the Chevy dealership and bought him one. He also said to put on a race, you have to have two things: a good venue and cars to fill the field!
And the penalties are ridiculous anyway. Who cares if Knaus was a cheater. ALL the best crew chiefs in history have cheated or worked in the gray areas as they say. Thats why they were great. These cookiecutter crapwagons they drive now look stupid. I say give them some stock looking noses, fuel injection and the crew chiefs a little room to be semi creative. _________________ R3 --- (Robby Harper III)

If you remember a few years back, Robby Gordon switched to Dodge about a week before the Daytona 500. He showed up with an illegal nose on his car. This was the nose that was sent to him and it being so late he didn't have time to verify it (he probably never thought he needed to). As it turned out the place he got it from (don't remember if it was Chrysler or what) sent him the wrong one. The one sent to him was a new prototype that hadn't been approved yet.
Robby was fined and docked for this. He appealed it and I don't remember the outcome but it was similar to Carl's deal. _________________ Blaise Haynes

absolutely True Robby : I know for a FACT that both Bill SR and Bill Jr often had drivers come up to them after an event NEEDING fuel money to get home on or to buy a set of tires for the next event . Some of the names that come to mind were Jimmy Means , Dave Marcus ,J D McDuffie and other independents. I do recall Richard Childress when he was driving as being a real small operation ,running week to week when he had the dollars to barely get to the next event . mostly ALL crews were volunteers . You would really be surprised how many were living on Bologna sandwhics at the track Running Used Parts ,Trading This for That . i heard Earnhardt Sr. had to hide in the trunk of his car at the track when he first started. he owed so many people money and after the race they'd come looking for him. _________________ Blaise Haynes
