Agreed! It was an amazing race! Keep me on the edge of my seat all the way until 3:30 this morning. Well except the parts where I fell asleep for a bit but that had nothing to do with the excitement level of the race. Laughing

What is the point of having a "soft option" tire that will last the whole race ??
I thought the whole point of the "soft option" was to allow the teams a choice of strategy's and force pit stops to be used in order to prevent "flag to flag" races.
It is still fairly obvious though, that even if a car is 2 sec a lap faster, once it gets behind the wing of a leading car...overtaking is still nigh impossible.
sooner they get rid of all wings the better for overtaking and "tire management" strategy's.

Chad,

Is the surface at the Melbourne circuit less abrasive than some of the newer, pupose built tracks? I'm wondering if that might be the reason they were able to run the softer compound tires for so long. What was the air/track temperature like?

JB made a good (and lucky?) call...plus Vettel's problem. Button drove a very smart race.

There were some "fastest laps" set fairly late in the race too, indicating that the tires still had life in them after many, many laps.

Also the cars weighed a couple hundred pounds less at the end because of the fuel burned so that contributed too.

I think we still need to give them time to sort out the tires and such. As was mentioned many times over the weekend, this is the basically the first "real" test for the tires since no one really pushed at Bahrain since they didn't know how long they could go on fuel and tires. At Australia it was obvious the drivers were pushing much harder and being less conservative. Maybe with the data gained over this weekend B'stone will develop different compounds so the drivers actually have to choose over soft or prime tires.

the problem isnt that the wings make the down force, it is that they are the main makers of the downforce. When they had the tunnels, the cars were not as affected when following, mostly because the wings were not the bigest producers of downforce, but a part of it. basically, the following car lost some downforce, but not as big of a percentage as now.
