You'll get all sorts of advice on engine builders but IMHO the most important thing is to find someone who will take the time to help out when needed. The best builder in the world is no good to you on a Saturday night when you can't get it running right if you can't get a hold of them.
Some of us will give out cell phone numbers and be quick to answer while others seem to have a policy that they don't talk to customers no matter what.
Also, some tracks run strictly to the WKA or IKF rulebook while others have little exceptions that are allowed (this is especially prevalent at tracks still running flatheads in my experience). If your track falls into the latter category the local guy may be a better bet than someone out of town no matter how good they are since you may be at a disadvantage running a strictly legal engine.
If you're brand new you should check and see if they'll let you run an LO206 or restricted Animal. upkeep cost will be less and if the track switches over to LO206 for juniors you'll have a truly even playing field (as far as motors are concerned). Your first season it won't be the engine that makes the difference anyway which is why finding a builder that is willing to help you with set-up and other stuff is important. Heck, I've even helped my customers out with the psychology of 12-year-old drivers
Good luck, and do check out if you can run the LO206 at your track, it'll be much easier to not be worrying about engine stuff your first year. _________________ John Matthews

| this is actually going into our second year of racing we were lucky to buy a complete kart from a local racer that was thinning his inventory. Our local track is strictly wka rules from what ive seen last year . We even went into the rookie one class and won the points championship. They (the track officials) are moving him up two classes?? so now im scrambling to get set up for new class and rules thought just a restrictor plate was my solution . |
