|
|
Hi everyone,
I'm looking to get started in karting, and the Briggs Animal seems like the most economical way for me to do so.
This might be a stupid question, but I'm not sure about what I need to look for in pairing a chassis with this engine. Will any chassis work, like a Margay Brava 1.X? Or do I need to get a chassis specifically for a four-stroke engine?
Additionally, what would I need for parts to mount the engine? I'm trying to get an estimate of costs, and I'm really not sure what to expect.
Thanks a lot for any help or advice. |

Biggest issue is the angle of the crossmember in front of the rear axle. On many karts it is too close to the axle in the area of the axle sprocket / chain. A 4 cycle specific frame will have clearance, many 2 cycle frames also have sufficient room. I have a Tony kart ( don't remember the model )and there is sufficient chain and seat clearance. You can use just about any frame with the Burris jackshaft set-up.
I'm a proponent of Briggs engines. Not sure where you race but the LO206 version of the Animal is a very low cost way to go. For a few bucks more ( considering what is included ) the World Formula version is a downright bargain. I race Animals on dirt Speedways and love them but depending on your local racing the other versions ( LO206 or WF ) may be the way to go. Check with your local track to see what's running there.
Need an engine ? Check with Jim Frantz at Faster Motors.com. Great engines , service and advice. _________________ I breathe ,therefore,I race |

I'm with Bernie.........if you're on a tight budget, go with the LO206. For my money though, I think the World Formula is absolutely the best bargain out there for karting. Darn near bulletproof, and can be raced right out of the box. Both those engines are at or near the top when it comes to low maintenance.
I've run alky animals and I've switched over to a World Formula. Used ones can be had for 6-700 but I'd throw down for a new one at about $9-950. You can find them that cheap if you make some calls. Motor, clutch, air filter, pipe ( no silencer ), comes complete. Gas, oil and race. They are not slow either.
Find yourself a good, well taken care of used 4 cycle chassis for cheap and get to the track. Some 2 cycle chassis' will accomodate the WF too. I'm not sure which ones. I use a Margay 4.7 4 cycle kart.
Don't let anyone tell you TaG karts, or yamaha's are cheap to maintain. They're not. I'd say a competitive KT100 package will cost you twice as much in upkeep as a World Formula.
Just my .02 cents.
