I like the idea of steel gears instead of plastic so, the point is academic but, the gear connection with the clutch sounds like a plot.

Sorry Walt... I meant balance gears. My assessment though is still true - as the new clutch puts more strain on the plastic components, resulting in the need for the upgrade.
Keep in mind that BRP and the distributors warranty many items - however, if you do not use them as specified/recommended - it can void that warranty, like anything else.

We ran ours this weekend, pretty easy & straight forward to install. Does make a tad of a ringing noise since you now have metal on metal.
2 Questions: Since there is no way of holding the clutch drum secure when tightening the drive gear nut, is there going to be some sort of special tool manufactured ? Also, when are the drums available alone and how much $$$ ?

There is a new part number for a holding tool that has a pattern for each drive gear. I believe that it shows it on the instruction pamphlet that is in the clutch kit box that you got from me a few days ago.
I haven't seen one yet. I'm not sure if any of the importers have them in stock.
No news on the cost of the item, nor the cost of the drums.

Yeah, I know. But It hought it would be more fun to pass some time on the forum.

Makes it tricky trying to tighten that nut without it. Came loose on us once. OK now.

Hope the drums are released soon. P.I.A. having to change the drive gear instead of the drum.

I sure hope this is not an item that if you don't have you can't compete at the front. Maybe it's beeen talked about, but is this part faster or slower than the current spec, and is it an option for 09, or required, or?
I sure dont need another way spend $. I just bought a new clutch and had two others rebuilt in the past two months. One of the reason we went Rotax is to avoid the part of the month club.

IIRC, Mark Ouimet (SSCEast) in a previous thread (WKA Daytona discussion IIRC) stated that BRP's position is that there is no performance advantage to the new clutch/gears, based on their testing prior to release. |

What's your initial testing show? Is the new clutch kit faster, slower, or the same? Any differences in terms of performance or driving?

Hi Carlos,
Our testing at the worlds was good with no slippage or failures. We did not have the chance to test back to back versus the old style clutch so I can't give you performance suggestion.
On the dyno the engagement is within 200rpm of the old style (slightly higher).
On another note - the new steel balance gears are a drop in replacement for the plastic ones and are highly recommended to avoid failure of the plastic gears!!!

That's interesting, thanks. Was that test done by comparing two unused clutches (and associated parts)?
