I have a small KX motor that I am repairing and I don't know how to identify the year of the motor and the size. I believe it is a KX80. Please let me know how I determine that information. The vin# is KX080RE019903. Any help is kindly appreciated.

I opened the clutch cover and found that the end of the shaft that the clutch basket sits on is broken off for some reason. Anyone know how that could have happened? What do parts do I need to repair it?

Also, can you please tell me what the part is called that holds the part that creates the spark for the plug. The part broke (first picture). thank you

Happy New Year!!

Hi Dustin,

Sorry I can't help with the year identification but the part that holds the clutch on is your crankshaft.

You'll need to rebuild the whole thing to fix it, sorry Crying or Very sad

You might find it better to look for another engine, 80 shifter motors should be pretty cheap but not many places are racing them anymore.
You might be better off finding out what's raced around you and changing to a different motor if you want to go racing.

Fill out your profile and let us know where you are, there might be someone near you that can help.

Cheers,

I think the broken part is the gear shaft. Is that right? Can someone also tell me what the piece is called that holds the solenoid (the black piece that plugs into the spark plug). As you can see in the first pic, it is broken and I need to get another. thanks

it is either the out put shaft or 13 tooth gear those are the only 2 shafts in the tranny from the pic's I was looking at.

The black piece is the coil and the part that is broken is a after market coil mount..

That would be the front transmission shaft, Dustin.

The rear transmission shaft is not visible in this photo because it sticks out the other side of the case. The idler gear that transfers motion from the kick starter to the small gear on the back of the clutch housing is covering the bearing that supports "this" end of the rear transmission shaft.

Also, please take a moment to update your profile with your first and last name, as requested in the registration instructions when you signed up here, thanks. Smile

Do you have any direction for me on replacing that shaft? I think the most needed info at this point is to find out what year this motor is so I can start searching for parts. How do I find out what year this motor is? I posted the vin# earlier in the thread.

Take it to a Kawasaki dealer and they will tell you the year and what part you will need......

OK,

You guys are right, not the crank. Embarassed

But will still need to rebuild the tranny and might as well check the crank while you have it apart. But, depending on where he wants to race (if he wants to race) it might not be worthwile.

Kawi dealer should be able to help with parts but a while back I bought an entire CR80 shifter with a CR125 engine for $500. So, repairs might not be the best course of action here.

But what do I know? I used to restore old Triumph cars Rolling Eyes

Cheers

John – With me it was old MG’s. What a chamber of horrors those British sports cars were. I still giggle sometimes when I get in my Toyota and it just starts and runs and nothing falls off. Dustin, I think Jeff is right, take the number to the dealer.

We have three MG's. The bigest problems we have with any of them are the good old Lucas wiring. Otherwise they run like tops.
