The 2008 Daytona KartWeek is history and Fry Racing's good fortunes continued today, with Lance winning 100cc Controlled Spec. It was an exciting race that was a 4 kart battle for most of the race with Nate Grindell leading the way over Kevin Webb, me and Lance. Brandon was struggling with clutch problems and lost the draft running in 5th. About 20 minutes into the race Brandon's clutch expired. A few minutes later I lost the draft as we lapped a pack of Yamaha Sportsmen and in my attempt to keep up I leaned the carb too far and detonated my Reed Jet!

Lance got by Webb for second and came to the finish line 3 kart lengths behind Grindell only to have Nate disqualified in tech for painting his "spec" pipe! Good for Lance, but not the way he wanted to win. Everyone knows that Nate won and to be DQ'd for painting a pipe is not right. I appreciate the idea of a "spec pipe" class, but painting your pipe should not make it illegal. I see no difference if I spray WD 40 on it to keep it from rusting than spraying paint on it!

OK I am off my soap box; another great thing that happened for Fry Racing was that last night at the Year End Awards banquet we were awarded the Road Racing "Family of the Year". We have been very fortunate to win many races and awards in my racing career, but this award was the best and very much appreciated. My only dissapointment was that my father who has been by my side for most of my 46 year racing career was not able to attend this year due to other committments.

Congrats to all the winners including Randy Fulks for Daytona wins #40 & 41. What an awesome feat! Thanks to WKA for a great event and to God for keeping us safe and for the great weather. For you that did not make it you missed a great event. You better make it next year. Now it is on to Kershaw and the rest of the super WKA RR schedule. Thanks to David & Rob for the "Blog" and to the rest of you with your kind words.

Happy New Year!

Jim, Brandon, Lance, Barb, Kristin, Nadia, Lindsey, Ryan, Lilee, Hanna, Lukas, Ed, Joan, Mike, Cheryl and Justin Fry

Jim,

Congrats to you and the family on the wins and the accolades. You guys certainly represent all that is good about road racing and that's why David's idea to pitch this KartWeek blog to you was perfect. Thanks as well for embracing the concept and keeping us all in the 'Fry Family' loop during the event!

Hope to see you soon...likely Road America. With David racing, I'll probably get roped into actually doing some race reporting again! Wink

Rob,

You should be racing and making David reporting.

Jim,

Was it a ceremic coating? If so it can change the characterist of the pipe.

Gary,

The paint was Walmart or Home Depot black paint. A person could see
where the pipe clamps wore off the paint. I watched the entire
spec pipe race. The top 3, Grindel, Fry, and Webb stayed together like
a freight train. On the last lap Nasty Nate opened up to appx. a 20 kart length win (not 3 lengths).....
I don't think the paint affected anything. Apparently Nasty cruised the whole race a little fat on the carb settings, then leaned it down and drove hard on the last lap. I do hope the 3rd place finsher is happy over the
trophy they stepped up to.... And I am not part of any team. I was cheering for most of the top teams mentioned above and the LAD and
CKI entrants......walking thru their pits and talking to all of them. This
was a heckuva class and race and wanted to set it straight. Congratulations to the Fry's for great success, Nasty for showing us
why he is one of the most feared/respected drivers in WKA roadracing,
and Brandon Webb for running so fast with the elite drivers.....as basically
a rookie in this class, Jim Grindel and Kris Buerman for smoking fast engines.

Controlled class on Monday was another story as LAD had their engine/driver come in first but that is another story and tired of writing

Hey Kevin,
I am bad. In my previous post I called you Brandon....so to get it
straight KEVIN WEBB, not Brandon Webb

Congrats,
