OK, I am probably going to get an angry-gram from my friends at Stars but the Stars Final has never overshadowed the SuperNationals - even in it's leanest years.

Lorenzo Mandarino is not racing.

Both Lorenzo and Peter from Pserra, called the Stars office three weeks ago to advice of the cancellation, left messages and got no return call,
i am sure Peter still wants a full entry refund from stars.

Vince.

The other part of the attendence equation is the current financail problems we have. In the past few weeks, the market has dropped 4,000 points. If you were on the fence about going which a lot of people are this late in the year anyway, you probably opted to stay home. I can't remember a season final that set attendence records be it Stars of the PMT.

I think the primary reason for the low turnout is three-fold.

#1 - There is no doubt that SuperNationals have always overshadowed the National Finals in Vegas. Putting the finale in Vegas where it could be directly compared to the SuperNats, which had a five-year headstart, was just a bad move. Add in the fact that the open concept of the SuperNats allows everyone come to play, and that the Stars finale is further hindered because its the end of the season-long program, means that the draw is more widespread. This will lead to a difference in numbers because they are simply different events. In every series I've ever covered or participated in, the entry numbers have dwindled heading to the finale. That's not a support plea for Stars, that's a fact.

#2 - With what I just stated kept in mind, season-long support for a multi-race series is at an all-time low. I'm very surprised by the number of teams and drivers that bail out early when a title is not in the cards. Numbers have always fallen near the end of a season, but the combination of the high travel costs and the alarming lack of committment to driver development over success means that some people are leaving the series as soon as they have a bad weekend.

#3 - The SuperNationals will also enjoy a large draw thanks to the fact that it is a one-off event that can attact drivers from all over the country for a single race. Even the local or regional competitor can budget to afford a trip to Vegas for a race like the SuperNats. It's the biggest draw in sprint karting right now, no question. The funny thing is, I expect to see the drivers who are running here at the Stars National Finals dominating the top-10 at the SuperNats. Everyone is going to the SuperNats, but the best of the lot will be here at the Speedway this weekend. The diehard superstars will run the Stars program through to the end.

Just some random thoughts...

Rick if you were not so transparent for your love of cars over karts your post might hold more value.

EKN Trackside Live: Friday Practice

Now that we're past the lunch break, the drivers are back on-track to start putting down real lap times. I spoke with several drivers this morning who said that the track was very dirty, not surprising considering the fact that it is a temporary circuit that utlizies both the infield road course and access roads. There was very little grip for the first couple of sessions, but the rubber is starting to go down in places and the times are falling.

David will post the immediate top-10s from the final two sessions of the day and we'll prep and post the full results from the final two sessions when everything gets wrapped up for the day.

We have the awards banquet tonight and we'll be taping a Happy Hour podcast there as well.

Stay tuned for continued coverage...
