I understand your frustration but where do you stop bending the rules??? What is the correct thing to do? Daniel ran a great race yesterday. Congrats to Taylor Minch too. _________________ Shayne Shipley

Neither you or Daniel should have any animosity because of the reasoning. Why am I saying all of this you ask ? A few years back … you could have been one of the Dad’s funding your son’s midget career, and getting ready for the Chili Bowl in Tulsa. Only to find out AFTER you just dropped, 30 to 50+ large, on your new midget, and accessories … that now … JR. is ineligible, because of his age, and this is/was the first year of this new age requirement. Only to find out much later, and getting ready to be really-really pissed-off … you knew nothing about the ‘experience’ wavers that were available. By my calculations …… your pocket book is waaaaay ahead of the above mentioned Dad‘s, and Daniel has a lot of racing ahead of him, whatever the form he peruses. |

I'd like to thank the staff and management of USA International for hosting an amazing event in such an awesome location.
I was very jealous of my son being able to drive on a circuit that reminded me very much of a shrunken VIR long course, in the dry and the wet.
The staff of the track was very, very friendly (I'm pretty sure it's part of the Wisconsin statutes that residents must be friendly) and very helpful in all situations (except dropping a second off laptimes). Having the snackbar open until 9pm may not seem like a big deal, but it was really nice for my son and I to be able to wander up for an ice cream after finishing cleaning up the kart, before taking a shower in the onsite (clean) facilities and climbing into the sleeping bags in the tent.
For most of you, a National or Grand National event is a matter of course, something that you do regularly. For us, it was a vacation of the best kind. Sure, nearly freezing to death on Monday night wasn't exactly fun, but after that, all the weird weather wasn't a hardship.
There were a few things I didn't exactly appreciate, but even in the daily big picture, none of them were really significant.
My family and friends who called me throughout the event were pretty disappointed with Race Fan Radio. After my buildup of the Rotax program to them, they expected the MicroMax drivers to be described as something other than little kids who had no business at a National event. I haven't had the chance to listen to the on-demand rebroadcasts yet, but assured them that they were probably just misinterpreting the coverage since it was geared toward the racers, and probably not the casual fans.
Now, the trip home, different story. Hurricane Ike decided to tear up I-65 and all the towns along it. I was very thankful for a 600 mile range between fuel stops, and diesel prices instead of gasoline. |

Hi Dale,
I think when you listen to the RaceFanRadio broadcast of the MiniMax events, you'll realize that while we did discuss the idea that we're not big fans of Cadet-aged kids running extensive national series all over the countryt, we do like the idea of the regionally-based MiniMaxers getting the chance to travel to that one HUGE event that is more of a vacation/experience. We watch a lot of 10 year-olds trek all over the country and we're not big proponents of that kind of thing, even though the racing is normally the closest of all the classes at the national events.
Your story sounds like it is exactly the kind of thing that is so awesome about the Rotax program. You and your son race regionally, and then gear up for the Grand Nationals that will become a life experience that you'll always have as a family. And sleeping in a tent? I love it! Please e-mail me privately with more info and some photos.
Please extend our congrats to Jesse on an impressive top-five. _________________ Rob Howden

I thought the broadcast on RaceFanRadio was awesome. I don't know how many times Rob said his famous line. "Book It" All the classes got coverage. Some more than others, but that is to be expected in my opinion.

Dale,
I hope your family and friends may have misinterpreted what was said by the Race Fan Radio announcers. But even if the words they broadcasted were what you said, this is OK. One of the great things about our democracy is we respect the right of everyone to express their opinions.
We will have a conference call sometime in the next 10 days and the Micro Max class will be part of this discussion. I can tell you that it was fun to watch them. We learned a lot as this was the first time I have worked with a group this young at a national. If they are included in the program next year we will have some specific rules pertaining to the class to make things easier on them.
To be honest when they came off of the track I really wanted to run over and give each one of them a big hug. It was amazing to watch them on the track and some of the competition was very amazing.
Back to the Race Fan Radio broadcast, no one should take comments of this type personally because it is their opinion and we do not have to agree, but we should respect the opinions of everyone. We learn a lot from listening to the views and opinions of many different people, some of it is useful and some of it is not, but we should always listen to it.

Like I said, I haven't had a chance to listen to the broadcasts yet and expect that there is a misunderstanding. Only Racefanradio is listened to in my garage since "discovering" it during a Stars races earlier this year.
My intention was to bring up the difference between "TV coverage for the masses" which is not always exactly accurate but is full of sensationalism, vs Race Fan Radio coverage by racers, for racers, in a non-apologetic manner without a lot of regard for (biased by) sponsors and the need for a big crash.
I'm not sure my non-racing family and friends were able to appreciate the coverage given to an exhibition class.
Either way, it was a great event, I appreciate all of the effort RFR put into the event. My original comments about RFR don't read the way I meant them. I was suprised to learn that the race call was not simply a broadcast version of the PA system race call. |

We still made the team by winning the Florida tour. It was very disappointing to sit on pole, win everything in the dry and wet and then not race the main. Something happened in the gear box and blew a half dollar size hole in the back of the motor. Congradulations to all the winners and qualifiers.
Wow, what was the sheet being handed out about the track NOT CHARGING FOR ANYTHING AT THE EVENT (track, ambulance, pit spaces, ect.) ?????????? Nothing was charged to the promotors and was suppose to help the racers in this economic time. Even said if people needed help getting home to come see them and they would help. Great bunch of people.
Can't wait for the world's.

Congrats to all of America's Team, but in particular our So Cal boys, Taylor Miinch, Justin Coplen and Miles' best pal Garrison Masters ... Make us proud in Italy.
On a personal note, Daniel Formal is a wicked little racer and should be going, no question, as he has proven all season long he is capable of great things. |

No he shouldn't, the rules forbid it.
Don and Danny went into this year knowing that his birthday was too late for him to compete at the Worlds, yet they competed anyway, due to the overlap in the US Rules.
Danny is a big kid, almost grown out of the Junior class as a 12 year old.
That is still no reason for BRP to change the rules for one guy.
