At this point, it looks as though I will lose my bet.
I had wagered that we'd have 30 drivers for F125 this year in Topeka, since we were no longer running on the torture track that was Forbes Field. Instead, we'll be running on the smooth asphalt that is less than one year old, at the Heartland Park Topeka racing facility, only a mile away from the former site.
There are some "Usual Suspects" names missing from the current entry list. Until tonight, mine was one of those. If you are a sometimes procrastinator like me, now is the time to hit those computer keys and sign up online at scca.com! Or use a FAXed entry.
If you have been mulling whether or not to make the trip, do it. We plan on having a grand time, and have requested that we be allotted enough space for paddocking together as in the past. If there is an issue of transporting your kart, or even yourself, put that out on this list. we are always happy to help someone get to the Nationals. Used to driving a shifter, but need a ride for the event? Post that here too.
In any case, do it today. In a couple of days, the late fees will begin kicking in, and the cost to play will be going up. I'm never in favor of paying late fees! Here is the deadline, as purloined from a post by Lefty MacLeod:
**************************
Reminder:
This is a reminder that entries for the 2006 SCCA Tire Rack Solo
National Championship must be received by 4:00 pm CST Wednesday, August
30 to avoid the first late fee ($75). The second late fee ($150) is
applied for entries received after 4:00 pm CST Friday, September 8.
Please pass the word so you and your friends can be a part of the first
Solo Nationals at Heartland Park.
********************
Please join us in celebrating the First Solo Nationals at Heartland Park!
You'll miss out if you don't go, and we'll miss your company, competition, and camaraderie. Our run Days are Tuesday and Wednesday September 26/27. Registration and tech are on Monday the 25th.

Im surprised not to see some of the top F125 drivers signed up this year(Harrington, Straus, Frish, Monday). What's up with that?
I guess we will have some new trophy winners this year. |

Thanks for the compliment, Marc. I had planned to go. I went to the SRT Nationals held recently on that surface to learn something about setup. I scheduled my vacation, bought a 6 x 12 enclosed trailer, joined SCCA, bought 2 sets of autocross tires, and ran the Divisional. Then I looked at it and computed that it was going to cost another $900 for lodging, fuel out & back and entry... and decided that I had too many other demands on my funds. I will miss going, though.
But autocross is not the only venue I run. GLSKUSA will be running a double race weekend at New Castle mid-September, and that's close enough to home that I can avoid a bunch of fuel and lodging expense. Besides, our class pays down 3-5 places depending on entries, and sponsors like Klein, Mothers and John's Kart Shop gives us free stuff. There's not even any Honda contingency at Natls this year.
I'll be anxious to see how the moto vs. ICC plays out. I think it may finally point out some flaws in the present rule set, but we've had that discussion many times before.

Tom H. is a new dad this year, that may be a big factor. He did run a Pro, but otherwise seems to be playing it cool. He does have an entry in the Kansas Region's Warmup event on Sunday the 24th. Sebastian Strauss seems to have gone incognito since his move from Wisconsin to VA. Not sure if he has been running any locals, but was not at the DC Pro. Deric Frisch does surprise me (his not being entered). Last I heard, he was planning on running the Pro and the National. He'll now be stuck with the late fee for Nationals, and may miss the Pro entirely unless he gets in that entry in the next day or so. Bob Monday... see above!
As for the trophies, don't count out all of the "old" hardware winners....

For those running the National, but not entered in Kansas Region's "Warm-up":
REMINDER: National Test & Tune
8/28/06
This is a reminder that on-line registration for the National Test & Tune will be available at www.scca.com beginning Friday, September 1st noon Central. Click on “Tour” then click on “National Test & Tune” on the schedule and follow the directions.
The National Test & Tune will be run adjacent to the Warm-up event Sunday, September 24th 8:00 am – 3:00 pm. Registration fee is $25 for 3 runs, no refunds for cancellation, and you are required to work one heat. The run/work order will be posted no later than noon September 15 once entry density and mix is determined. Entry is limited to 360 competitors.
I seem to remember reading that drivers already registered for the Pro and/or the "Warm-up" will not be allowed entry in this run-by SCCA National Office event.

And the "latest" word is:
Sebastian bought a house early in the year, does not have a garage or any place to work on his kart. Unfortunately, he bent it at a track in March, and so decided to sit out the rest of the year and come back with another chassis in 2007 (after building a garage this fall). I think he was happy to hear that another Yamaha will be running in Topeka this year.
Deric woke up from the fog and is now entered in the Pro Finale, so we have 12 for that, exceeded only by SS at 17 and STX at 15. (L2 also has 12) He also sent in an entry for the Nat.
With Deric and another late entry Charles Smith, we will be at 25 for the National, plus 3 in the L class. Who knows, we still might get another one or two.... With 1117 total entries today, this will be one of the biggest Nationals ever. In the Modified Category, we now have the second largest class, pretty far behind the FV's and F440/500's in FM with 37. Still, that we could draw more than CM is a real accomplishment. Yeeha!
Without the bashing and jumps at Forbes, I'm expecting some really close competition in the F125 class. And John, I wish you could join us too. Larry, it has been too long already. I still owe ya for sending me those parts.

Today two more names showed on the Pro entry list: Lisa Garfield and my co-driver JT McClintock. We are now at 14 for the Pro! Total entries is up to 252. Hooya! |

JT will have to change. He only has one event. If they don't move him before we arrive in Topeka, I'll make sure he gets put into a 1-event class so he can't affect the final standings, just like they've done the last few years.

Word I have is they may be running the 1-event drivers with their regular class, then pulling them into an index. Don't worry, when JT beats you, he won't be taking points from you. |

I just didn't want Paul whining when I win the class and JT finishes 2nd just ahead of Paul, giving me the series win.
